“#Classic \u2018Reading Rainbow\u2019 Series<\/a> Will Return, But Without LeVar Burton \u2013 Review Geek”<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a 15-year break, the classic kids\u2019 show Reading Rainbow<\/em> is finally returning. The new show, called\u00a0Reading Rainbow Live<\/em><\/a>, will follow the original show\u2019s structured use of dance parties, field trip<\/a>s, and books to engage kids in learning. That said, it will feature an expanded cast of young hosts and a live, interactive format.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, LeVar Burton is not involved with Reading Rainbow Live<\/em>. He encountered some legal problems<\/a> when trying to revive the show in 2016, mainly because he didn\u2019t hold a license to produce new Reading Rainbow<\/em> episodes and launched a (successful) crowdfunding campaign without permission from WNED-TV. Additionally, LeVar Burton was sued for using his Reading Rainbow<\/em> tagline on his podcast, though he\u2019s now legally allowed<\/a> to use the phrase.<\/p>\n

LeVar Burton\u2019s absence may have little to do with these disputes, though. As explained by creative director Amy Guglielmo<\/a>, the creators behind Reading Rainbow Live<\/em> really \u201cwant kids and viewers to see themselves in this show.\u201d That\u2019s why it\u2019s employing a diverse group of young hosts<\/a>, called \u201cRainbows,\u201d to run various episodes and segments. Details on the show are still a bit slim, but participating audience members can dance to music, answer questions, or ask the cast members questions. It\u2019s like old-fashioned kids\u2019 shows with a live audience or guests \u2026 but mixed with a Zoom call.<\/p>\n

There are some other strange factors at play here. It seems that Reading Rainbow Live<\/em> may not show up on any streaming services, and may instead stream on its website or in an app<\/a>. Also, the Reading Rainbow Live<\/em> website has a \u201cregistration\u201d page<\/a> that offers \u201ca special discount code to use when tickets go live.\u201d Will parents have to pay for the \u201cinteractive\u201d part of Reading Rainbow Live<\/em>, or do you need tickets to watch<\/em> the show?<\/p>\n

Amy Guglielmo says that Reading Rainbow Live<\/em> will debut in early 2022. The show is still looking for cast members and \u201cRainbows,\u201d and if you feel up to the task, you can apply on Playbill<\/a>.<\/p>\n
