And according to ATI\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ati.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FlyZero-one-stop-global-connectivity-FINAL-3.12.21.pdf\">press release<\/a>, the plane <span>would offer the \u201csame speed and comfort as today\u2019s aircraft\u201d but with zero carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Plus, the ATI estimates a whopping range of 5,250 nautical miles \u2014 this would mean <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing from London to San Francisco or Beijing without a stop, or to Auckland with just one stop.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_the_aircraft_work\"><\/span>How does the aircraft work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The aircraft\u2019s 54-meter wingspan carries two turbofan engines powered by hydrogen combustion.<\/p>\n<p>The fuel is stored in four cryogenic fuel tanks at around minus 250 degrees Celsius: two larger tanks in the rear fuselage and two smaller in the front fuselage.<\/p>\n<p>The smaller tanks keep the aircraft balanced as the fuel burns off and eliminate the need for any additional aerodynamic structures.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_such_an_aircraft_viable_at_the_moment\"><\/span>Is such an aircraft viable at the moment?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Certainly not. And the ATI is well-aware of that, saying we could have the concept aircraft \u201cone day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that we\u2019re years away from this \u201cone day\u201d when we could actually use (long-flight) commercial hydrogen planes. And, in fact, the ATI doesn\u2019t specify how it plans to tackle the challenges associated with hydrogen.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Lower_energy_density\"><\/span>1. Lower energy density<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The ATI says that \u201cliquid hydrogen is a lightweight fuel, which has three times the energy of kerosene and sixty times the energy of batteries per kilogram.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, indeed, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-storage\">US Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy<\/a> (EERE), on a mass basis, hydrogen holds <span>120 MJ\/kg of energy versus gasoline\u2019s 44 MJ\/kg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, hydrogen has lower energy density by volume: <span>8 MJ\/L versus gasoline\u2019s 32MJ\/L, meaning that larger quantities need to be stored to provide the equivalent energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This, in turn, translates into the need for larger or more storage tanks which can affect both the capacity and the design of a plane.<\/p>\n<p>As a consequence, aircraft may have to carry fewer passengers to make space for the storage tanks, or become significantly larger.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia<\/a> plans to gradually scale up the capacity of its hydrogen-powered planes, with the current prototype, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aviationtoday.com\/news\/zeroavia-completes-first-hydrogen-electric-turboprop-flight\">HyFlyer I<\/a>, being a six-seater.<\/p>\n<figure Elevated cost<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Using green hydrogen doesn\u2019t come cheap.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be produced from water through a process called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrolysis\">electrolysis<\/a>, powered by renewable energy such as solar and wind. This process not only requires large amounts of energy, but is also very expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/20200507_Hydrogen-Powered-Aviation-report_FINAL-web-ID-8706035.pdf\">the management consulting group McKinsey<\/a>, liquid hydrogen<span>s is more than four times as expensive as conventional jet fuel, and likely to remain at least twice as expensive for the next few decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Lack_of_infrastructure\"><\/span>3. Lack of infrastructure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s a no brainer. An entirely new infrastructure would be needed to store and transport hydrogen at the airports.<\/p>\n<p>This would be expensive and doesn\u2019t really exist at scale yet.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_takeaway\"><\/span>What\u2019s the takeaway?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The FlyZero initiative plans to release more detailed findings early next year, including designs for regional, narrowbody, and midsize aircraft, economic and market reports, technology roadmaps, and a sustainability assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, these findings will give us clearer answers.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, one thing we can say for certain is that the UK is betting on hydrogen for the future of aviation, although it\u2019s debatable whether this specific tech will mark the industry\u2019s new dawn.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re years away from eliminating the challenges related to the use of green hydrogen at such a large scale, and until then it\u2019s possible that batteries or sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) will have solved the problem of zero-emission flying and hydrogen might not become mainstream at all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
