{"id":378434,"date":"2021-12-09T00:53:14","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T21:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/over-200-newspapers-are-suing-facebook-and-google-for-killing-their-advertising\/"},"modified":"2021-12-09T00:53:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T21:53:14","slug":"over-200-newspapers-are-suing-facebook-and-google-for-killing-their-advertising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/over-200-newspapers-are-suing-facebook-and-google-for-killing-their-advertising\/","title":{"rendered":"#Over 200 newspapers are suing Facebook and Google for killing their advertising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Over 200 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>papers are suing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and Google for killing their advertising<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>More than 200 newspapers are suing Facebook and Google, alleging that the tech titans have unfairly manipulated the advertising market, siphoning away their revenue and crippling their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits are being filed on behalf of some 30 different companies that publish over 200 separate smaller newspapers across the country, and include a trove of local publications in Texas, West Virginia, Mississippi, Ohio and other states. <\/p>\n<p>The suits, which were recently consolidated in New York state, come as the Justice Department,\u00a0along with several state attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-sues-monopolist-google-violating-antitrust-laws\">sued Google<\/a>\u00a0for violating antitrust laws. Facebook is facing a similar antitrust\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2020\/12\/ftc-sues-facebook-illegal-monopolization\">lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0from state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an antitrust complaint against the companies. Details of that suit have recently come to light, alleging collusion between the two tech giants to squash the competition and keep them on top of the digital ad market.<\/p>\n<p>The local newspapers make similar antitrust arguments, and are looking to \u201crecover past damages to newspapers,\u201d demanding payouts commensurate with the money that\u2019s been sucked out of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>A full list of plaintiffs, who are working with a unified collection of lawyers and law firms, was published by Axios <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/list-newspapers-lawsuits-google-facebook-43f45195-1196-4db3-927c-fee0c22d1a90.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the newspapers win, they could be entitled to a windfall, with settlements that are three times the actual damages. Although figures have not been not divulged, Clayton Fitzsimmons, one of the newspapers\u2019 lawyers, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/1-local-newspapers-lawsuits-facebook-google-3c3dee3a-cce3-49ef-b0a2-7a98c2e15c91.html\">told Axios<\/a> that the goal of the litigation is \u201cto recover past damages to newspapers\u201d and to\u00a0\u201cestablish a new system going forward in which newspapers aren\u2019t just competitive again, but can thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fitzsimmons referenced Australia\u2019s new laws that force tech firms to pay publishers for their content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese companies are more powerful than Standard Oil in its heyday, so no one wants to be the first to take them on,\u201d said Doug Reynolds, managing partner of HD Media, one of the companies suing.\u00a0In a recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/small-west-virginia-publisher-launches-antitrust-fight-with-google-and-facebook-11612453879\">interview with the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, Reynolds added: \u201cWe felt the political and legal climate have moved in our favor and are ready to go ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/newspapers-sue-google-facebook-over-ads2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Facebook logo\" class=\"wp-image-20419691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/newspapers-sue-google-facebook-over-ads2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/newspapers-sue-google-facebook-over-ads2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/newspapers-sue-google-facebook-over-ads2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Facebook is facing an antitrust lawsuit similar to Google\u2019s from state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The consolidated lawsuits are currently pending.<\/p>\n<p>Google and Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Google said, in a statement to The Post: \u201cThese claims are just wrong. The online advertising space is crowded and competitive, our ad tech fees are\u00a0lower than reported industry averages, and publishers keep the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/admanager\/display-buying-share-revenue-publishers\/\">vast majority of revenue<\/a>\u00a0earned when using our products. A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/02\/14\/fast-facts-about-the-newspaper-industrys-financial-struggles\/\">Pew Research study<\/a>\u00a0from last year revealed that the industry\u2019s ad revenues dropped by a staggering 62 percent over the past decade, falling from $37.8 billion in 2008 to $14.3 billion in 2018. Meanwhile, newsroom employment halved, while circulation sizes similarly\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/\">receded<\/a> \u2014 with weekday papers falling from a total circulation of more than 50 million in 2007 to about 28 million by 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Google and Facebook and similar tech giants have been making a killing, thanks to ad revenue.
