Previous entries include Can humor be reduced to an algorithm? and Why robots should fear death as much as we do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>Meta (the company your grandparents still call <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>) just unveiled a new AI system it calls \u201can important milestone that signals a shift toward more intelligent, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ized AI systems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s called the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ai.facebook.com\/blog\/harmful-content-can-evolve-quickly-our-new-ai-system-adapts-to-tackle-it\">Meta AI Few-Shot Learner<\/a>,\u201d presumably because the person who names stuff at Meta was on vacation when it was time to come up with a title. It doesn\u2019t even work as an acronym. MAIFSL? Nah.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_big_idea\"><\/span><b><span>The big idea<\/span><\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Content moderation is hard. Humans don\u2019t get along. Whether we\u2019re talking about the wide-open worlds of Facebook and Twitter, tiny targeted communities such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2019\/2\/25\/18234950\/knitting-racism-instagram-stories\">knitting forums<\/a>, or just about any site with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/brain-flapping\/2014\/sep\/12\/comment-sections-toxic-moderation\">a comments section<\/a>, if you give humans a modicum of anonymity and a platform, they\u2019re going to be shitty to each other. It never fails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The problem is simple. Content that crosses the line \u2013 whatever a given platform\u2019s definition of that may be \u2013 needs to be curated. But finding a solution is incredibly difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even platforms boasting a lack of censorship and complete respect for the right to free speech need to have some form of content moderation. We don\u2019t want child and animal abuse videos circulating unchecked or mass murderers using social media platforms to stream their crimes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A couple of decades ago the answer was simple. Online communities <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed human moderators to oversee forums. The more users a site had, the more human moderators it needed to keep the discourse civil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately that system can\u2019t function at the global scale. We\u2019d need to create an entire planet full of moderators to moderate all the people on this one. And then another to moderate the people on the second planet, and so on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That leaves social media companies with two choices: either limit the number of users to an amount that can be monitored by human moderators, or invent a way to automate content moderation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_efficient_failure\"><\/span><b><span>More efficient failure<\/span><\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Big tech chose \u201cnone of the above.\u201d All of the popular social media platforms have grown far too large for human moderation to have much of an impact, and there is currently no artificial intelligence system robust enough to function with even a fraction of the efficacy of a human moderator. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In other words: AI sucks at content moderation. And there\u2019s no reason to believe that\u2019s going to change until it achieves human-level performance in language and social understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not what\u2019s happening with this new system. It will still fail to moderate the vast majority of user content on the platform. It\u2019ll just fail more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p><span>Meta\u2019s new AI is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2104.14690.pdf\">a few-shot learner<\/a>. That means it\u2019s a small, easy to train model that can be modified and updated quicker than larger, slower models. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The research is fascinating and the team\u2019s ability to get AI to do so much with such little data is incredible. But <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/12\/metas-new-ai-system-tackles-harmful-content\/\">the assertion that this<\/a> \u201csignals a shift toward more intelligent, generalized AI systems,\u201d is laughable at best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s also ironic. The term \u201cartificial general intelligence\u201d (AGI) is used to describe an AI capable of performing any feat that a human could, given the same access. And, while that\u2019s arguably what it would take for AI to successfully moderate content at the scale of social media, it\u2019s clear that making a language model a bit more efficient isn\u2019t the same thing as solving AGI.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
