{"id":379033,"date":"2021-12-10T06:35:18","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T03:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/biden-says-military-use-not-in-cards-for-russian-ukraine-invasion\/"},"modified":"2021-12-10T06:35:18","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T03:35:18","slug":"biden-says-military-use-not-in-cards-for-russian-ukraine-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/biden-says-military-use-not-in-cards-for-russian-ukraine-invasion\/","title":{"rendered":"#Biden says military use &#8216;not in cards&#8217; for Russian-Ukraine invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Biden says military use &#8216;not in cards&#8217; for Russian-Ukraine invasion<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>There is a strange dissonance between America\u2019s \u201cunwavering support for Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity, its sovereignty, its independence\u201d recently expressed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and President Biden\u2019s admission that the use of force against a prospective Russian invasion of Ukraine is \u201cnot in the cards right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From a tactical standpoint, it is rarely a good idea to announce upfront how far one is willing to go in escalating a conflict. That is doubly true in the age of \u201chybrid warfare\u201d and \u201cgray-zone aggression,\u201d which Russia itself has pioneered.<\/p>\n<p>After all, if the West decided to play as dirty a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> as Vladimir Putin, it has a number of options worth keeping on the table, if only to make the Russian strongman feel uneasy about his brazen moves. Russian aggression also has helped coalesce a sense of Ukrainian nationhood and hardened Ukrainian attitudes toward Russia, which had been traditionally quite warm.<\/p>\n<p>Yet none of that helps ease the blatant contradiction between rhetorical flourishes about the West\u2019s and America\u2019s firm commitment to Ukraine\u2019s future as a free, sovereign nation and our collective unwillingness to lift a finger in its defense. Almost seven years since the Kremlin\u2019s initial aggression, Crimea remains in Putin\u2019s hands and much of eastern Ukraine under Russian control \u2014 notwithstanding successive waves of sanctions and opprobrium that descended on Russia.\u00a0If Putin continues, the administration is threatening him with more of the same, including the supposedly \u201cnuclear option\u201d of cutting Russia off SWIFT, the global bank settlement scheme.Guess what. If Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity is not worth defending, is Taiwan\u2019s? How about dozens of other countries with border disputes and past grievances, including those within NATO and the EU?<\/p>\n<p>And would our allies and adversaries be entirely misguided in wondering whether the administration would not look for an off-ramp in case of a conflict involving a NATO member state?
