Specifically, one of their main disadvantages is the flammability of the organic electrolytes currently used for their production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thankfully, hope is on the way. A team of researchers from Germany and Japan have developed a solution to fix this problem by replacing organic electrolytes with\u00a0aqueous (water-based) ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sounds_simple_but_it_isnt\"><\/span>Sounds simple, but it isn\u2019t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/ls0o33cgd0?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At first thought, the use of water sounds like a very straightforward answer to the problem \u2014 water is by default inflammable.<\/p>\n<p>But in reality, the integration of aqueous electrolytes into a battery cell has been problematic since 1994, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.264.5162.1115\">when the idea was first tried out by scientists W. Li and J.R. Because of that, it reacts and produces undesirable hydrogen and oxygen gases.<\/p>\n<p>And although researchers in the past have experimented with different anode materials to avoid this, they weren\u2019t able to significantly expand the electrochemical window and, in turn, increase the battery\u2019s energy density above 100Wh\/kg.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_new_research_bringing_to_the_table\"><\/span>What is the new research bringing to the table?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As you might have guessed, the researchers managed to develop a new anode material with \u201cimpressive performance levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve created a<span>\u00a0metastable and nanosize molybdenum oxide with a rock-salt structure, which shows a higher energy capacity and a longer lifespan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, <span>even when the battery was recharged 2,000 times, its capacity dropped less than 30% \u2014 while for conventional lithium-ion batteries <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/batteryuniversity.com\/article\/bu-1003a-battery-aging-in-an-electric-vehicle-ev\">the drop is more than 45% after 1,400 lifecycles<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new material has also managed to increase the battery\u2019s energy density at 107Wh\/kg, although that\u2019s still significantly lower compared to current Li-ion batteries at <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epectec.com\/batteries\/cell-comparison.html\">200Wh\/kg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>The research team acknowledges their new tech currently offers lower energy density and voltage<\/span>, but believe that their study \u201copens <span>a way to develop high-energy, durable, and safe batteries on the basis of metastable and nanosized oxides with aqueous electrolyte solutions.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But I, for one, am excited for a less flammable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can read the full study <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/48\/e2024969118#ref-5\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
