Here\u2019s how your iPhone can keep giving you directions while you\u2019re off the grid.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Problem_No_Offline_Navigation_in_Apple_Maps\"><\/span>The Problem: No Offline Navigation in Apple Maps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Years after its rough launch, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/328452\/hey-iphone-users-apple-maps-is-good-now\/\">Apple Maps is a surprisingly solid map app. But the iPhone\u2019s built-in Maps app has one big omission: There\u2019s no way to download maps for use offline.<\/p>\n<p>If you do start navigating to a location while you have a signal, Maps can seamlessly help you get there even if your signal drops out on the way. However, if you try to start navigating again when you don\u2019t have a data signal, Maps won\u2019t help.<\/p>\n<p>This makes Maps particularly useless for getting out of many national parks, for example. We like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/here-wego-maps-navigation\/id955837609\">HERE WeGo<\/a>. It\u2019s free, works with Apple CarPlay, and lets you download huge map areas. You can download a map of the entire USA, for example, or download just one or more states. You can download maps of other entire countries, too. (A map of the entire USA uses about 7.83 GB of storage on an iPhone.)<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a basic map that shows your location, either\u2014you can ask HERE WeGo for navigation directions and search for places and points of interest in the map, all entirely offline.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you prefer Apple Maps, it\u2019s a good idea to have a backup app like this while traveling long distances. If cellular data isn\u2019t available, you\u2019ll be able to turn to your offline maps.<\/p>\n<p>To use this feature, download the app and launch it. However, Google Maps will let you search for places on the map offline and will give you navigation directions, too.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these limitations, this feature is still pretty useful. After all, Google Maps is a solid maps app. You can actually download quite a large area, so it\u2019s particularly useful for downloading your town and the nearby area or an area that you\u2019re traveling to. However, it isn\u2019t ideal for a long <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesavvy.com\/183\/how-to-prepare-your-car-for-a-road-trip\/\">road trip<\/a>, and there\u2019s certainly no way to download an entire country at once.<\/p>\n<p>To use Google Maps offline on an iPhone, download the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/google-maps\/id585027354\">Google Maps app<\/a> and launch it. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen and tap \u201cOffline Maps.\u201d From here, you can tap \u201cSelect Your Own Map\u201d and zoom in or out to choose a specific area of Google Maps that you want to download for use offline. You\u2019ll find many other offline map apps in the iPhone App Store.
