However, this is a space where it\u2019s challenging to gain Wi-Fi internet connectivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/ls0o33cgd0?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Telcos told them the only solution was for either the building owner or themselves to pay tens of thousands for an IT upgrade. They did this reluctantly for an early customer, yet wanted a better solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Bharadwaj, the concrete and steel environment effectively acted as a \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.faradaycage.org\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Faraday cage<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u201d which<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0meant that the EV chargers wouldn\u2019t talk to people\u2019s mobile phones when they tried to initiate charging. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You could find yourself stranded, unable to charge your car. \u201cSo we had to innovate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ok, I thought they might be telling me about their use of sound wave tech or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lifi.co\/\">LiFi<\/a>, but they have come up with something a lot more interesting. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NFC_and_blockchain_solves_a_real-world_problem\"><\/span>NFC and blockchain solves a real-world problem\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their solution is a patent-pending self-reliant connectivity blockchain protocol called Apollo, which, combined with NFC, allows charging stations and smart devices to be deployed anywhere, even in the most rugged environments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company calls it the world\u2019s first \u2018No Internet for Things.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m always interested in the answer to the question \u2018Why now?\u2019 and Bharadwaj explained the three inflection points that successfully came together in 2020:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pressure on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le to\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/exclusive-eu-antitrust-regulators-charge-apple-over-its-nfc-chip-tech-sources-2021-10-06\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make NFC chip technology available to third-party developers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0brought the use of NFC into the wider consciousness.<\/span><\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Contactless payments during COVID became more robust and more widely adopted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wider adoption of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/distributed-ledgers.asp\">Distributed Ledgers<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Xeal has attracted plenty of interest from investors. The company <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.builtinla.com\/news\/xeal-raises-14m-electric-vehicle-charging-station\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">raised $14 million<span\/><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in seed and VC funding earlier this year. With Xeal, the use of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nextpit.com\/what-is-nfc\">NFC<\/a> means the only time you need the Internet is to download the app in the first instance to create a profile that includes their personal and vehicle information and payment details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You then receive a cryptographic token on your mobile phone that authenticates your identity and enables you to access all of Xeal\u2019s public charging stations. The token is time-bound, which means it dissolves after use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To charge your car, you hold your phone up to the charger. Your mobile reads the cryptographic token, automatically bringing up an NFC scanner. As Bharadwaj explained:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#13;<br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We need to know how long they were there and how much energy they consumed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the person finishes charging, they tap their phone to the charger to end the session.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From this, the phone receives the ledger, and they go home or go back to work or wherever their phone\u2019s connected. This is essentially a delayed gateway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Your phone is the gateway to the cloud. And all the processing happens in the background. The user never has to open the app. It\u2019s all done in the background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the user next accesses WiFI, the user gets another token. More importantly, the details of their charging session \u2013 even if they forgot to log out \u2013 are distributed to other users\u2019 phones in the network. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a result, even if one phone fails to reconnect to Wi-Fi, other phones can update the ledger over the network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As Bharadwaj detailed:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#13;<br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can think of them as a flock of birds that are all talking to each other. And all it takes is one user to interact to bring in the last ten records or transactions onto the distributed ledger. This includes instances where users may not have tapped to end or if your phone dies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Security\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of the most significant pain points for EV charging is security. A cybercriminal could use multiple entry points to trigger an attack when you charge an EV\u2013 these range from charge point operators to payment providers, utility companies, and third-party vendors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">EV chargers are particularly vulnerable to \u201cman-in-the-middle\u201d attacks. These are cyberattacks where an attacker relays or alters communication between two parties. This enables the attacker to relay communication, listen in, and even modify what each party says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cybercriminals use these attacks to access personally identifiable information and steal credit card information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last year, security researchers SwRI developed a \u201cman-in-the-middle\u201d device that spoofed signals between a charger and vehicle. It could overcharge and undercharge the battery, potentially resulting in big safety problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With Xeal, explained Bharadwaj, the use of NFC means that to access the charging network, you need to be at the site, at the location of the device, and be within one inch to listen in on any communication. \u201cWe\u2019re not going anywhere outside of the charger and the phone.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, Distributed Ledger Technology is synchronized and accessible across different sites and geographies by multiple participants \u2014 in this instance, all the users of Xeal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Distributed ledgers are inherently harder to attack than centralized networks because all of the distributed copies need to be attacked simultaneously for it to be successful.
