In the process, she also became a resource for others struggling with sleep issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust last week a friend reached out to say he has a serious problem with screaming in the middle of the night,\u201d Macedo told The Post. \u201cHis neurologist put him on a benzo [Benzodiazepines, a class of drug often used to calm or sedate] and said, \u2018there\u2019s nothing I can do for you.\u2019 \u201d But Macedo felt there was more that could be done, so she reached out to some experts for their opinions and found a sleep study to enroll her friend in. When you find yourself tossing and turning, grab a notebook, get out of your bedroom and write down everything that\u2019s on your mind. \u201cI was skeptical about how on earth is this stupid activity going to help me sleep when Ambien doesn\u2019t, but it does work. It reprograms the way you think,\u201d Macedo said of the practice, which is known as a \u201cbrain dump\u201d and is used in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\/about\/pac-20384610\">cognitive behavioral therapy<\/a>. Macedo recommends setting your phone\u2019s color filter to grayscale to make it less appealing. \u201cAll of these apps, video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, whatever, are engineered to be addictive and the color aspect must be part of the equation,\u201d said Macedo, who found herself losing hours of time to Instagram at the start of the pandemic, when she was hungry for human interaction. \u201cWhen I turned my screen black and white, I soon found out that my screen use dropped 42 percent.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>To do this on a recent iPhone, go to \u201cSettings\u201d and then \u201cAccessibility\u201d and then \u201cDisplay &amp; Text Size.\u201d From there, select \u201cColor Filters\u201d and choose \u201cGrayscale.\u201d Macedo also recommends creating a shortcut on your phone to easily toggle between color and black and white. To do this, from the \u201cAccessibility\u201d page, click on \u201cAccessiblity Shortcut\u201d and \u201cColor Filters.\u201d This will enable you to turn the filter on and off by simply clicking the button on the side three times. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Embrace_wiggle_room_for_weekend_wake-up_times\"><\/span><strong>Embrace wiggle room for weekend wake-up times<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s time to shake up that hard and fast rule that you should wake up at the same time every day, Macedo said. \u201cOne of my experts said there\u2019s actually a 45-minute wake-up window on the weekend: You don\u2019t want to sleep in for an extended period of time, but the idea of having to wake up at the same time every day is the same as telling people they have to go to bed at the same time every night. That\u2019s terrible advice for anyone with insomnia!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Set_a_%E2%80%9Cgotcha_alarm%E2%80%9C\"><\/span><strong>Set a \u201cgotcha alarm<\/strong>\u201c<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Get ready for this eureka moment: The reason you\u2019re waking up at 3 a.m. every morning might not have anything to do with you being a lousy sleeper. Now I eat oatmeal or a piece of whole-grain toast with butter a half-hour before bed.
