\n Mayor Bill de Blasio officially presented his school reopening plan Friday \u2014 calling for a weekly \u201cblended app<\/a>roach\u2019\u2019 of in-class and online learning for \u201ca vast majority of kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most students will physically be in class two to three days a week, the mayor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can certainly say, \u2018Yeah, it\u2019s gonna be tough, it\u2019s gonna take a lot of work,\u2019 \u2019\u2019 Hizzoner told reporters in a conference call.<\/p>\n

He said the city\u2019s daily positive-test rate for the coronavirus must remain below 3 percent for the plan to work. He said Friday\u2019s figures show it remains steady at 1 percent.<\/p>\n

The discovery of a vaccine for the deadly contagion would help bring schools \u201cback to full strength,\u2019\u2019 de Blasio said, referring to all in-school learning.<\/p>\n

He said it was \u201cconceivable\u2019\u2019 that schools could fully reopen for on-site instruction without a vaccine if the number of virus cases in the city becomes virtually nonexistent but added that the scenario would be \u201cdifficult.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Each school\u2019s plan will vary between one to three days of in-student learning, with the rest of the school week remote, depending on such things as its enrollment and layout, city officials said.<\/p>\n

Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, who appeared with the mayor at the press conference, said, \u201cWe want students to have as much in-person experience as possible,\u2019\u2019 while keeping in mind the health constraints.<\/p>\n

He said they were making the decision now because \u201cwe want to give some consistency to parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really dealing with \u2026 imperfect solutions,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

City Hall is facing dual pressure from the city teachers and principals unions over the reopening. Both groups have complained about a lack of adequate safety and logistical preparation.<\/p>\n

City Department of Education spokeswoman Danielle Filson said in a statement Friday, \u201cThe health and safety of all New York City students, teachers and staff is the priority when it comes to reopening.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure the safety of all New Yorkers, we\u2019re planning to open all buildings at the same time in September, with equitable space sharing arrangements among co-located schools, including charters.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
