<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       If Wall Street were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter of atmosphere-warming carbon emissions, nestling it right between Russia and Indonesia, a new report says.<\/p>\n<p> A study with a title warning of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbubble.net\/\" class=\"icon none\">\u201cWall Street\u2019s Carbon Bubble\u201d<\/a> by\u00a0the Sierra Club\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0left-leaning Center\u00a0for\u00a0American\u00a0Progress released Tuesday\u00a0shows that eight of the largest U.S. banks and 10 of the largest U.S. asset managers combined to finance\u00a0an estimated 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions based on year-end disclosures from 2020. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       And the groups offer some policy suggestions ranging from stress testing to boosting deposit insurance tied to climate risks to toughening supervisory ratings, which financial services trade groups worry mix up short-term risks with longer-term risks.<\/p>\n<p>Bank funding of the oil patch and industrial heavyweights comes even with many financial concerns pledging to cut their own emissions. These companies have been <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly embracing, at least through comments, the world\u2019s push to slow climate change, including at the recently-concluded U.N. gathering in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>For further comparison, the emissions from Wall Street financing tracked in the report are equal to what 432 million passenger vehicles spew into the air over one year. The number from Wall Street would have been larger if\u00a0Scope 3 emissions data\u00a0and other factors were included. Scope 3 tracks emissions produced throughout a company\u2019s supply chain and by its customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Oil and gas are a \u2018subprime carbon bubble\u2019 worth $22 trillion: Al Gore<\/p>\n<p>Critics of forcing banks to quickly unravel their exposure warn of systemic upheaval. But Sierra Club and CAP say inaction is what risks a market catastrophe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf left unaddressed, climate change could lead to a financial crisis larger than any in living memory,\u201d said Andres Vinelli, vice president of economic policy at CAP.<\/p>\n<p>Insurer Swiss Re has said that the global economy risks losing\u00a0more than 18%\u00a0of current GDP by 2048 if no action on the climate crisis is taken. Climate change has brought increased shore erosion, drought, wildfires, flooding and more, driving up insurance and logistics costs, for starters. Tuesday\u2019s report put the expected economic growth reduction from unchecked climate change at 11% to 14% by 2050. In all, the financial institutions that operate in the G-20 largest economies have nearly $22 trillion of exposure to carbon-intensive sectors. These sectors will have to adapt or be left behind, most analysts believe, as solar, wind<br \/>\n        ICLN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205740995\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.01%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and nuclear energy get a larger toehold, and as gas-burning cars are sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed for electric vehicles<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.82%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        RIVN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/230726939\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.48%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p> The groups are hoping to dial up the pressure on a Biden White House that has made combating emissions, which are largely generated by burning fossil fuels<br \/>\n        CL00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209723049\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.16%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       a priority. Biden and leading Democrats have called for net-zero U.S. emissions by 2050, and a 50% reduction by as soon as 2030. One step toward that was announced this week with a pledge to convert the federal government to greener buildings and vehicles, a vow that will require billions in spending across agencies. <\/p>\n<p>But the administration, by some accounts, has been slower to push the financial sector to respond.<\/p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission is considering requiring tougher climate reporting rules from publicly traded companies, including banks, and recently closed its comment period, meaning that a ruling could come in 2022. The Labor Department has also taken up the issue of climate change and other <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> issues within retirement-savings plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> \u2018Substantial amount of work yet to be done\u2019: Major report calls on SEC, Fed, banks and insurers for robust climate-risk disclosure<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Follow_the_money\"><\/span>Follow the money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, a Trump-nominated candidate to a Democratic seat on the panel, said Tuesday during a briefing that followed the report\u2019s release that she noted the legions of public companies making net-zero emissions pledges around the COP26 Glasgow summit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ostensibly good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cYet, when I dig a little bit deeper, it\u2019s sometimes unclear to me how companies will achieve these goals. Nor is it clear that companies will provide investors with the information they need to assess the merits of these pledges and to monitor their implementation over time. Investors have noted the importance of understanding how the pledges are being implemented this year, five years from now and 10 years from now, rather than simply waiting to see if, in 30 years from now, the goal of net zero emissions comes to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will simply be too late,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Crenshaw repeated a push for \u201cmetrics calculated using reliable and comparable methodologies that enable investors to decide whether companies mean what they say. This is a core purpose of the SEC is disclosure obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crenshaw also said that investors should be privy to lobbying money linked to banks and might better use such information in drawing a clearer conclusion for how much financial companies remain exposed to fossil-fuel companies, for instance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the Paris Climate accord [in 2015], a number of public companies went on the record in support of the accords,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, questions remain about whether those companies continue to make political contributions that support opposition to the accords.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>That pact aims to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to limit the\u00a0global temperature increase\u00a0in this century to 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, and ideally no more than 1.5 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> Major banks, including JPMorgan and Citi, have invested $3.8 trillion in fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Questions remain about whether those companies [saying they back the Paris climate deal] continue to make political contributions that support opposition to the accords.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 SEC\u2019s Caroline Crenshaw<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beware_one-size-fits-all\"><\/span>Beware one-size-fits-all<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p> Some, mostly Republican, lawmakers and banking trade groups have largely conceded that regulation changes may be inevitable, but have warned against one-size-fits-all rules that could undermine the financial system and unfairly create winners and losers.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe report makes a number of recommendations for the financial sector that would be counterproductive, ignore <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fsforum.com\/news\/climate-risk-and-large-banks-what-do-the-data-say\" class=\"icon none\">the current capacity of the largest banks to manage significant risks<\/a>, and stymie the very institutions that are supporting their clients and customers to meet the challenges of a multi-decade transition to a low-carbon economy,\u201d said Financial Services Forum President and CEO Kevin Fromer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile capital requirements, stress testing and deposit insurance premiums are important components of a safe and sound financial system, there are no grounds for their use to reallocate credit as a substitute for other public policy,\u201d Fromer said.<\/p>\n<p>BlackRock\u2019s Fink has said that tougher regulations could push firms out of the public realm and into private financing, itself a form of \u201cgreenwashing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve, which is allowed to act independently of the White House, has taken a deeper look at the potential systemic issues of climate change, although it, too, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greencentralbanking.com\/2021\/06\/23\/opinion-fed-needs-to-step-up-on-climate\/\" class=\"icon none\">has trailed its major-nation counterparts<\/a> in shoring up official policy, some regulation experts say. Others say <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobooth.edu\/review\/dont-rely-central-banks-fight-climate-change\" class=\"icon none\">monetary policy focused on the short term should not involve reviewing climate change impacts<\/a>.
