Meta\u2019s incoming CTO, Andrew \u201cBoz\u201d Bosworth, is making quite the splash. The kind of splash you make by cannonballing into your swimming pool, soaking all your guests, and then blaming them for getting wet.<\/p>\n

In a Sunday interview withAxios on HBO<\/a>, Bosworth was grilled about misinformation on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Facebook veteran mounted a stern defense of his company. According to Bosworth, it\u2019s not platforms that are responsible for misinformation \u2014 it\u2019s their users:<\/p>\n

Individual humans are the ones who choose to believe or not believe a thing. They\u2019re the ones who choose to share or not share a thing. I don\u2019t feel comfortable at all saying they don\u2019t get to have a voice, because I don\u2019t agree with what they said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Bosworth does have a point: people are<\/em> awful and stupid. We\u2019re drawn to divisive content, susceptible to bullshit, and prone to confirmation biases. Yet Bosworth overlooks how algorithms influence these tendencies.<\/p>\n

Facebook\u2019s recommendation systems\u00a0are frequently accused of spreading misinformation to maximize profit<\/a>. Critics say the company eschews efforts<\/a> to address this as doing so would limit growth.<\/p>\n

As the creator of the News<\/a> Feed, Bosworth knows Facebook\u2019s algorithms better than most. However, he argued that users are responsible for what they consume.<\/p>\n

\n

People want that information. I don\u2019t believe that the answer is \u2018I will deny these people the information they seek and I will enforce my will upon them\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This defense of free expression simplifies Meta\u2019s influence. The company doesn\u2019t only choose what app<\/a>ears on Facebook; it also determines what the platform promotes.<\/p>\n

Meta delegates many of these decisions to recommendation algorithms, which have shown a penchant for false and divisive content<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower, has endorsed an alternative approach. She wants the company to ditch engagement-based rankings for chronological feeds:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a strong proponent of chronological ranking, or ordering by time with a little bit of spam demotion, because I think we don\u2019t want computers deciding what we focus on.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The issue with this approach is obvious: depreciating engagement could reduce revenues. However, there are signs that the switch is possible. Last week, Meta\u2019s Instagram announced plans to launch a chronological feed next year.<\/p>\n

The new rankings won\u2019t become the default, but the move suggests that further changes could come.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re certainly worth consideration. While we\u2019re ultimately responsible for what we consume, Meta doesn\u2019t have to amplify our worst instincts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
