That mournful finding ought to be reinvigorating the effort to stamp out cigarettes. Astoundingly, the opposite is h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening.<\/p>\n<p>A new tax on nicotine vaping, which Democrats have tried to inject into the Build Back Better bill, would drag more than 2.5 million Americans back to cigarettes, according to National Institutes of Health-funded <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/assets\/Congress_ecigtax_11.8.2021.pdf\">academic research<\/a>. And just weeks ago, the Food and Drug Administration effectively outlawed nearly all vaping products, though they\u2019ve <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1808779\">proven<\/a> to be the single most effective method to quit smoking ever devised.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s nominee to head the FDA, Dr. Robert Califf, helped craft that hardline policy in his brief Obama-era stint at the agency. His Tuesday confirmation hearing suggests he\u2019ll easily end up in the post again.<\/p>\n<p>So are public-health advocates up in arms? Nope. They too seem bent on destroying the nascent vaping industry, loudly urging the FDA to issue more \u201cmarket denial orders\u201d to deprive millions of Americans of the right to switch from smoking to the vastly safer alternative of vaping.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400,000 Americans lose their lives each year to smoking-related illnesses while not a single person has died from vaping nicotine. Yet groups like the American Lung Association and American Medical Association have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/press-center\/press-releases\/ama-calls-total-ban-all-vaping-products-not-approved-fda\">called for a total ban<\/a> on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/media\/press-releases\/do-not-use-eigarettes\">vaping products<\/a> but say nothing about the spike in cigarette smoking \u2014 even though vaping taxes and bans are directly correlated with increased smoking rates.<\/p>\n<p>Little wonder that stocks for the leading tobacco companies are all on the rise and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4465515-altria-new-us-tax-proposal-would-protect-cigarettes-buy\">analysts are bullish<\/a> that vaping crackdowns will continue that trend.<\/p>\n<p>If the Baptists-and-bootleggers coalitions of the 20th-century Prohibition era seemed uncanny, today\u2019s partnership between moralizing nanny-staters and the cigarette business is truly sinister.<\/p>\n<p>In this version of the economic fable, the prohibitionists are being paid directly by sales of the vice. That\u2019s because the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between tobacco companies and state governments provides a lavish and perpetual cut of cigarette revenue to state and federal agencies along with activist groups to cheer on the bureaucrats. <\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, the FDA\u2019s Center for Tobacco Products is bankrolled entirely by settlement funds, averaging more than half a billion each year. Each state gets huge annual payoffs, too \u2014 so long as people keep buying cigarettes.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take a degree in public-choice theory to see how that pipeline of cash can warp the incentives for public-health officials, who are supposed to be strictly reliant on clinical objectivity. The more cigarettes sold, the more cash the government gets.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the same problem with Califf, the White House\u2019s nominee to head the FDA: He\u2019s  a longtime consultant for a host of leading pharmaceutical firms that market smoking-cessation products. Senators at Califf\u2019s confirmation hearing would\u2019ve been right to ask why those companies are permitted to sell lucrative nicotine-replacement therapies that are far less effective than nicotine vaping, which he wishes to prohibit.<\/p>\n<p>Senators can still ask written questions, and they might also query him on the FDA\u2019s baffling arguments this month in the first vaping case considered by the Supreme Court. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/21\/21A176\/204393\/20211207173324495_Reply%20in%20Support%20of%20Emergency%20Application%20for%20a%20Stay%20of%20Agency%20Order%20Pending.pdf\">The agency has said<\/a> that its makeshift market-approval process poses \u201ca genuine risk\u201d to public health by forcing adult vapers who have quit cigarettes back into smoking, which the FDA says \u201cshould be avoided if at all possible.\u201d But at the very same time, the FDA is doing its utmost to strangle the vaping industry, threaten retailers and scare the wits out of the public with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8435607\/\">grossly distorted \u201cfear appeals.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While they are at it, senators might also seek testimony from the man who has spent more time and money lobbying the FDA to ban vaping than anyone: America\u2019s nanny-in-chief, Michael Bloomberg. In the 1920s, Prohibition\u2019s chief paladin was an ornery grandmother named Carrie Nation who toted a hatchet, convinced that God had ordered her to smash beer barrels. Today that mantle is held by Bloomberg, a self-anointed moralist who has spent many hundreds of millions to bankroll an army of lobbyists, PR agencies and front groups in his anti-vaping crusade.<\/p>\n<p>The more than 15 million Americans who use vaping products would cheer to the rafters to see those gentlemen finally face tough questions for denying Americans the freedom to switch from cigarettes to vaping and take control of their own health destinies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Amanda Wheeler is president of American Vapor Manufacturers.<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
