The goal was to reach an out-of-court settlement before the end of the year. The discussions have been facilitated by <strong>Murray Sinclair<\/strong>, the former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who left the Senate last January. Monday\u2019s announcement from the federal government <strong>does not amount to a settlement<\/strong> with the parties involved.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>New marching orders:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Chrystia Freeland<\/strong> gave new inflation control instructions to the Bank of Canada on Monday, asking the central bank to also consider employment, which <strong>Heather Scoffield<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2021\/12\/13\/bank-of-canada-told-to-fight-inflation-but-prices-wont-fall-anytime-soon.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitterhttps:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2021\/12\/13\/bank-of-canada-told-to-fight-inflation-but-prices-wont-fall-anytime-soon.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">writes<\/a> in the <em>Star<\/em>, might be a good idea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anand apologizes:<\/strong>\u00a0Defence Minister <strong>Anita Anand<\/strong> said Monday that successive Canadian governments<strong> failed to stamp out the \u201cscourge\u201d of sexual misconduct<\/strong> in the Canadian military, Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8445987\/federal-government-military-apologize-sexual-misconduct-victims\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCountless lives have been harmed because of inaction and systemic failure. This is a failure that our Canadian Armed Forces, our department, and the Government of Canada will always carry with us,\u201d she said. \u201cThese institutions failed you, and for that we are sorry. I am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Survivors and victims of military sexual misconduct received a historic and long-awaited apology on Monday from Anand, as well as from Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. <strong>Wayne Eyre<\/strong> and <strong>Jody Thomas<\/strong>, deputy minister of the Department of National Defence. More than 7,600 people watched the apology livestream on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, which comes after a year in which the Canadian military has been forced to confront what experts have called a \u201ccrisis\u201d of sexual misconduct within its ranks, particularly senior leaders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Omicron is moving:<\/strong> Dr. <strong>Theresa Tam<\/strong> said Monday that new COVID-19 cases are expected to \u201c<strong>rapidly escalate<\/strong>\u201d in the coming days as Omicron circulates, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/omicron-rapidly-escalate-canada-1.6284011\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0 Tam said there is \u201cgreat spread potential\u201d with omicron and the situation in Canada is a \u201cfew days or maybe a week\u201d behind the U.K.\u2014where <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong> today said that the country is dealing with a \u201ctidal wave\u201d of new infections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad news:<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> <strong>Patricia Treble<\/strong> looks at the numbers Tam released and sees uncertainty and reason for concern as we enter the holidays.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bad news keeps coming. On Friday, Dec. 10, <strong>Dr. Theresa Tam<\/strong>, Canada\u2019s chief public health officer, released the latest federal\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/phac-aspc\/documents\/services\/diseases-maladies\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19\/epidemiological-economic-research-data\/update-covid-19-canada-epidemiology-modelling-20211210-en.pdf\">modelling\u00a0<\/a>of the pandemic. It projects around 7,500 cases a day by January, assuming our transmission levels remain the same. However, if transmission increases by as little as 15 per cent, or if the new Omicron variant gets established, like Alpha and then Delta, then a towering wave unlike anything previously seen could arrive by the New Year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The upshot: think long and hard about holiday gatherings, experts say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get the jab:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, <strong>Andre Picard<\/strong> reviews what we know, and don\u2019t know about COVID-19 immunity and conclude with a simple message: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-we-have-a-lot-to-learn-about-covid-19-immunity\/\">get vaccinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">That\u2019s why there is <strong>a push for people to get third doses<\/strong>. We already have annual flu shots.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Manitoba needs nurses:<\/strong> The Manitoba government has asked the federal government to provide ICU nurses, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/manitoba-federal-government-icu-nurses-1.6284459\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean wins: Brian Jean<\/strong> won a UCP nomination battle 529 votes to 250, <strong>Don Braid<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/opinion\/columnists\/braid-jean-wins-nomination-handily-in-major-blow-to-kenneys-leadership\">reports<\/a> in the <em>Calgary Herald<\/em>, setting up a struggle with <strong>Jason Kenny<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If the former federal MP and Wildrose leader wins the seat, he will join the premier\u2019s UCP caucus as a<strong> sworn political enemy<\/strong> just in time for the April 9 leadership review in Red Deer. \u201cI will not be supporting him (Kenney) in the leadership review and <strong>will be asking for his resignation<\/strong> as soon as possible,\u201d Jean said in an interview. Kenney could still stop him cold by refusing to sign his papers. But the premier has already said he would accept the man he defeated for the UCP leadership in 2017. He wouldn\u2019t dare renege on that promise now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not fighting:<\/strong> <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> says for now he is going to stay out of the fight over Bill 21, the <em>Star<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2021\/12\/13\/justin-trudeau-says-he-is-staying-out-of-the-fight-over-quebecs-bill-21-for-now.html\">reports<\/a>, to avoid a dispute with Quebec.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Trudeau said as a court challenge now underway wends its way through the courts, it\u2019s \u201cimportant \u2026 to not give the excuse of a fight between Ottawa and Quebec \u2026 and to ensure that it is Quebecers themselves who deeply disagree with the fact that someone can lose their job because of their religion, and not to give the excuse to the Quebec government that this is federal interference but just to say no, Quebecers disagree with this principle, that a young woman should be able to lose her job, a teacher who was doing her job very well simply because of her religion.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Extremists in uniform:<\/strong> White supremacists in Canada\u2019s armed forces pose an \u201cactive counter-intelligence threat\u201d and national defence officials are \u201climited\u201d in their ability to root them out, <strong>Alex Boutilier<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8446253\/white-supremacists-canada-military-active-threat\/\">reports<\/a> for Global.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The National Security and Intelligence Review Agency reported concerns Monday that the Canadian Armed Forces\u2019 counter-intelligence unit is \u201climited\u201d in their ability to proactively identify white supremacists in the ranks.\u00a0\u201cThe presence of white supremacy within the Canadian military has been well documented. White supremacist groups actively seek individuals with prior military training and experience, or conversely, encourage individuals to enlist in order to gain access to specialized training, tactics and equipment,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not many trees yet:\u00a0<\/strong>The federal government has planted less than half a per cent of the two billion trees it pledged to put in the ground across Canada by 2030, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/only-8-5-million-of-the-two-billion-trees-promised-by-pm-have-been-planted-so-far?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1639425465\">reports<\/a>.
