But with 3G capabilities set to expire in 2022, things could get even more expensive for car owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">OTA updates are a hot topic for vehicles owners who resent paying for new services. I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reported earlier in the year\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">about Mercedes-Benz introducing an OTA subscription update to the all-electric luxury salon Mercedes-Benz EQ to modify<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/media.daimler.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/The-future-of-mobility-starts-now-start-of-sales-for-the-EQS.xhtml?oid=50981901&amp;ls=L2VuL2luc3RhbmNlL2tvLnhodG1sP29pZD00ODYxMzM5MSZyZWxJZD02MDgyOSZmcm9tT2lkPTQ4NjEzMzkxJnJlc3VsdEluZm9UeXBlSWQ9NDA2MjYmdmlld1R5cGU9dGh1bWJzJnNvcnREZWZpbml0aW9uPVBVQkxJU0hFRF9BVC0yJnRodW1iU2NhbGVJbmRleD0xJnJvd0NvdW50c0luZGV4PTUmZnJvbUluZm9UeXBlSWQ9NDA2Mjg!&amp;rs=0\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the rear-axle steering with a ten-degree steering angle<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/ls0o33cgd0?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fast-forward to this week, Toyota has consumers up in arms by setting <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/43329\/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an end date<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to free subscriptions for key fob remote start capabilities. This functionality is now only available with a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota.com\/connected-services\/remoteconnect\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Remote Connect<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> subscription. for many drivers. Via a corresponding mobile app, the key fob makes it possible for drivers to monitor, lock, or start their cars with their smartphones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota.com\/content\/dam\/toyota\/connected-services\/marketing\/pdf\/MY21_Connected_Services_Table.pdf\"> According to Toyota<\/a>, vehicles with Premium Audio can trial the feature for the next three years, and with the newer Premium Audio up to 10 years.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But otherwise, car owners will need to pay for a subscription to continue using the key fob\u2019s remote start. It\u2019s a price of either $8 a month or (currently) $80 a year. We own the car, but the company owns the software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And we really should have learned from the pain of smart homes. IoT-connected homes have a graveyard of failures. A company goes bust or is acquired. It stops supporting older devices or updating the device\u2019s software. A security problem forces the device out of operation. Or\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2012\/Chapter368\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2012\/Chapter368\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">legislation is passed<\/a> that updates the law (as in the state of Massachusetts, for example) regarding the right to repair your own devices.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> standards evolve faster than the IoT device.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Long term, the goal of car makers is to eliminate privately owned vehicles. Instead, we\u2019ll pay for a subscription service for autonomous vehicles to pick us up and drive us where we need to go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But until then, I have many questions about how OTAs will play out:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Should IoT-connected services have a minimum lifespan of functionality after the sale of a car model ends? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If we buy a car with certain software subscription features, should we be able to take this subscription to the next car we buy from the OEM? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What happens if we sell it second-hand? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Does the new owner have to pay again for the same software service? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What rights do we have to the subscriptions we\u2019ve paid for? (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Very little, it seems.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pissed_off_by_OTA_updates_Wait_until_you_have_to_deal_with_3G_sunsetting\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pissed off by OTA updates? Wait until you have to deal with 3G sunsetting!\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While many of our smartphones are embedded with 5G, you might not know that most cars still run on old-school 3G cellular networks. This will become a big problem in 2022 as telcos are moving on from 3G.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.att.com\/support\/article\/wireless\/KM1324171\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AT&amp;T<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is ending its 3G services in February,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/technology\/t-mobile-postpones-sprint-3g-shutdown-to-march-31st-2022\/ar-AAPRQJg\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sprint<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in March, and T-Mobile in July.\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/3g-cdma-network-shut-date-set-december-31-2022\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Verizon\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0giving you until December.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_the_end_of_3G_mean_for_the_average_consumer\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What does the end of 3G mean for the average consumer?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s going to affect\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/3g-shutdown-car-become-obsolete\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ALOT of cars<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A lot of software runs on 3G in cars, including WiFi hotspots, smartphone app connectivity, voice assistants, in-nav traffic and location data,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/gmauthority.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/onstar-hands-free-calling-will-be-sunset-in-2022\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hands-free calling<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, emergency call, and remote lock\/unlock functions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once telcos close down 3G, these features will no longer be available \u2014 unless the automakers upgrade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And for some customers, it will come at a price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For example, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/3g-cellular-network-retirement\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tesla\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> offering a modest fee of $200. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stellantis.com\/en\">Stellantis<\/a>, home to brands like Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, and Opel, will offer a subscription of appropriate hardware in 2GB of data per month at $9.99, or unlimited data for $29.99 per month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\"
