UNCASVILLE, Conn. \u2014 The contestant from Alaska was crowned Miss America at an event Thursday marking the competition\u2019s 100th anniversary.<\/p>\n

What began as a 1921 Atlantic City beauty pageant\u00a0has evolved away from the emphasis on looks alone<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 contestants are no longer judged on physical app<\/a>earance \u2014 with a new focus on leadership, talent and communication skills.<\/p>\n

Emma Broyles from Alaska claimed the centennial crown and a $100,000 college scholarship. She emerged as the winner out of 51 contestants representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia at the competition at a Connecticut casino.<\/p>\n

Broyles is the first contestant from Alaska to be named Miss America in the competition\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The finale that historically has been featured in a primetime television broadcast was available only to stream this year via NBC\u2019s Peacock service.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
