Doctoroff<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sidewalk-talk\/my-next-chapter-fighting-als-207ce7ca69c8\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0announced that he\u2019s stepping down<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0from his role of CEO at\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sidewalklabs.com\/toronto\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sidewalk Labs<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> due to serious health conditions. Sidewalk has been limping along since the end of the Quayside project. Now, starting next year, Sidewalk products Pebble, Mesa, Delve, and Affordable Electrification will join Google, becoming core to Google\u2019s urban sustainability product efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The founders started Sidewalk Labs with good intentions, but it exemplifies how manufactured smart cities and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, affordable housing, technology to curb pollution. Local data collecting technology would aid city planning and development processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The challenge was Sidewalk Labs\u2019 ownership by Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Local activists\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blocksidewalk.ca\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">vociferously questioned<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> who would own the data collected, whether it\u2019d be sold to third parties, and what it would mean for their privacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In May 2020 the project was\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sidewalk-talk\/why-were-no-longer-pursuing-the-quayside-project-and-what-s-next-for-sidewalk-labs-9a61de3fee3a\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">canceled<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Sidewalk Labs CEO Daniel L. Doctoroff shared:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As unprecedented economic uncertainty has set in around the world and in the Toronto real estate market, it has become too difficult to make the 12-acre project financially viable without sacrificing core parts of the plan we had developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_its_not_the_first_effort_to_build_a_smart_city\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But it\u2019s not the first effort to build a smart city\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Manufactured smart cities are nothing new. Even Bill Gates paid $80 million in 2017 to purchase 24,000 acres, with plans to build a smart city outside of Buckeye in Arizona. However, since the purchase, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of progress has been quiet, and the Smart City Arizona website <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/smartcityaz.com\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">appears<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to have been hacked\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But there are some notable examples of manufactured smart city progress:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Songdo_South_Korea\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Songdo (South Korea)<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The city of Songdo in South Korea is the location for a $40 billion project, the\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.songdo.com\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Songdo International Business District<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a purpose-built \u2018smart city\u2019 launched in 2002. In a city of <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">86 square kilometers, it<\/span> aimed to eliminate cars, with 40 percent green space and the capacity for 80,000 apartments.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure It\u2019s incredibly expensive, and requires significant buy-in from both public and private institutions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, can you create a culture in a newly built city? Culture is about ephemeral things like music, art, nature, and public spaces.
