school shooting threat \u2014 and that the late notice left no time to consider keeping their kids home Friday.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter sent out a note to principals about the unspecified threats at 11 p.m. Thursday night, according to the DOE.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators were then responsible for relaying the warning to parents \u2014 and many families said they only received word Friday morning, after their kids had already headed off to class.<\/p>\n<p>Community Education Council 30 member Deborah Alexander said parents in her Queens district were notified too late to potentially keep their kids away from class in light of the troubling posts.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander said that word of the threats were already spiraling on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> early said.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander said most people didn\u2019t hear from their schools until the morning \u2014 and that some had already dropped their kids off by the time they were alerted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of parents would have preferred to have that option,\u201d she said. \u201cMaking that decision while you are getting ready for work in the morning is a problem.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Alexander noted that a school in Long Island City \u2014 the New York Institute for Collaborative Education \u2014 had to lockdown for an hour Friday due to a called-in threat.<\/p>\n<figure Brooklyn high school parent said she was sent a message about the TikTok posts around 7 a.m. Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this was going around the day before, we should have been told much earlier,\u201d she said. \u201cAs if there isn\u2019t enough to worry about right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOE said it acted in a timely manner considering the unspecified nature of the threats and lack of a direct connection to New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sent letters regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> and non-specific threats circulating on social media to schools as soon as we had credible information,\u201d said DOE spokesperson Nathaniel Styer. \u201cThis was a general threat circulating nationwide, not specific to NYC, and schools passed on that information to families in a timely manner without delay.\u201d\u00a0\n
