The SMS, that reads \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d, was sent 29 years ago over the Vodafone network on Dec 3, 1992, and was received by Richard Jarvis, an employee at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The historic 15 character-long SMS will be auctioned off as an NFT in a one-off sale conducted by the Aguttes Auction House in France, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zf.ro\/business-hi-tech\/vodafone-scoate-la-licitatie-primul-sms-din-lume-in-format-nft-20404157\">according<\/a> to Romanian <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlet Ziarul Financiar. <\/p>\n<p>By auctioning off the world\u2019s first SMS in the form of NFT, Vodafone intends to redirect the earnings to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (the UN Refugee Agency) for helping the forcibly displaced people.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-12\/203747cb-fff8-4aca-a7de-5b2fe79859ba.jpg\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\">Source: Ziarul Financiar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The advertisement banner above translates to &#8220;Merry Christmas. The world&#8217;s first SMS auctioned for charity as NFT&#8221;. Vodafone\u2019s SMS NFT sale will take place this Tuesday on Dec. 21 via an online auction wherein the participants can place bids using Ethereum (ETH). The highest bidder will own exclusive ownership of the communication protocol that was used to transmit the world\u2019s first SMS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the SMS\u2019 glory, it took nine years for other networks to have Vodafone\u2019s ability to transmit and receive SMS. This move of minting the world\u2019s first SMS is another example of NFT\u2019s ability to tokenize and digitally preserve history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><strong><em>Adidas Originals to launch debut NFT collection<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NFT ecosystem has catalysed crypto\u2019s mainstream adoption as corporations find its use cases within their existing business models.
