It turns out lights, fanfare, and celebration help people around the world get through the winter doldrums!<\/p>\n<p>At this time of the year, the days are often cold, dark, and long (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway). This lends itself perfectly well to traditions, from the small and personal to the large and cultural. Here are a few of the winter traditions that get people through the dark half of the year in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hygge\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">Hygge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newyorker.com%2Fculture%2Fculture-desk%2Fthe-year-of-hygge-the-danish-obsession-with-getting-cozy\">Hygge<\/a> isn\u2019t a specific tradition or celebration: it\u2019s really a feeling\u2014one that doesn\u2019t have a direct English translation. Still, it\u2019s a feeling that has a specific association with winter in Denmark, where the term comes from.<\/p>\n<p>Hygge is best explained as a sense of coziness, comfort, and complete relaxation, such as what you\u2019d experience while enjoying a good conversation around a winter fireplace with friends. While anyone can feel hygge at any time of year, winter lends itself especially well to this feeling.<\/p>\n<p>The term caught on in the U.S. and Britain a few years ago, sparking a wealth of articles, how-to pieces, and products that promised to show you how to hygge. However, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/hygge-scandinavian-lifestyle-trend\/\">Scandinavians argue<\/a> that hygge is a feeling, not a product, aesthetic, or lifestyle, and they find its commoditization strange and unnecessary. Real hygge is always free.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chinese_New_Year\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">Chinese New Year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While there are many Chinese New Year celebrations in the U.S., there\u2019s much more to this holiday than the parades you typically see here.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chinesenewyear.net\/calendar\/\">Chinese New Year<\/a>\u00a0falls in January or February, depending on the lunar calendar. It\u2019s sometimes known as Lunar New Year, and the celebration lasts for about 15 days. Although it happens in winter, you may also hear Chinese New Year referred to as the Spring Festival because it marks the end of the coldest part of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating this holiday involves going home to be with your family. In fact, the Lunar New Year travel season is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/asia\/china\/articles\/10-chinese-new-year-traditions\/\">one of the busiest<\/a> holiday travel seasons in the world. Families hang decorations in red, the traditional color of the holiday, and give gifts of cash wrapped in red packages.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the house, traditional dances, fireworks, and parades mark the New Year celebration. People often shop at outdoor markets in the days leading up to New Year\u2019s Day, and also thoroughly clean their houses in preparation for the new year.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Three_Kings_Day\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Three Kings Day<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the U.S., many people don\u2019t really celebrate the 12 days of Christmas, although we may sing about them in Christmas carols. However, for those that do celebrate the full 12 days, the celebration culminates on January 6th with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/when-three-kings-day-and-how-it-celebrated-epiphany-772690\">Three Kings Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three Kings Day (or <i>D\u00eda de los Reyes<\/i>) is primarily celebrated in Latin America and Spain and is also called the Feast of the Epiphany. This day commemorates the time when, according to the Christian tradition, the Three Wise Men arrived to give baby Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh as gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional Three Kings Day celebrations involve a feast with \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mexicoinmykitchen.com\/three-kings-bread-recipe\/\">king\u2019s bread<\/a>\u201d for dessert, which has a figure of baby Jesus hidden inside. The person who finds the figurine has to cook the tamales for February\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripsavvy.com\/dia-de-la-candelaria-1588765\">Candlemas celebration<\/a>. Children also open their presents on this day, which are delivered by the three kings rather than Santa Claus.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_of_the_Little_Candles\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Day of the Little Candles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s winter technically starts on December 21st, people tend to think of December as a winter month, as Christmas looms on the horizon. In Colombia, the Christmas season kicks off on December 7th with <i>D\u00eda de las Velitas<\/i> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/colombia-begins-christmas-season-these-beautiful-light-displays-180967423\/\">Day of the Little Candles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, this day is celebrated with lots and lots of candles. Tiny lights illuminate buildings and homes across the country. In addition to candles, electric lights and paper lanterns are used to light up the night.<\/p>\n<p>The Day of the Little Candles heralds the eve of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/feast-of-immaculate-conception_n_1134352\">Feast of the Immaculate Conception<\/a>, which celebrates the Virgin Mary. However, some have compared this street festival to Mardi Gras for its rowdy and masquerade-like traditions.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate, people wear <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalgeographic.com%2Fnews%2F2016%2F01%2F160120-ukraine-malanka-festival-costumes-new-year%2F\">elaborate costumes<\/a> modeled after bears, goats, and more, and parade through the town while singing, dancing, and performing skits. Between the feasts and costume preparation, this holiday can bring a whole village together.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration is heavy on symbolism and humor and loosely tied around kicking off the spring season. When the celebration ends, the carefully crafted costumes can be stored and then re-done for the next year\u2019s Malanka.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yalda_Night\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_5\">Yalda Night<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The winter solstice, or the longest night of the year, can feel significant even if you don\u2019t celebrate a solstice holiday. But in Iran, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/events.wsu.edu\/event\/yalda-night-traditional-persian-celebration-of-winter-solstice\/\">Yalda Night<\/a> makes the solstice unique.<\/p>\n<p>This festival has ancient roots but celebrates something that still feels meaningful: the return of longer days. In ancient days, the celebration focused on the birth of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=goddess+mithra&amp;oq=goddess+mithra&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.740j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">light-god Mithra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/articles\/travel\/7268\/yalda-night-how-iranians-celebrate-winter-solstice\">Yalda Night celebrations<\/a> today involve getting together with family and staying up all night (or at least very late). Traditional poetry and myths may be read, while fruits and nuts are served along with tea. People also pray for good luck in the coming year and acknowledge the end of the harvest season.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Soyal\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_6\">Soyal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Soyal is another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com\/Hopi+Soyal+Ceremony\">solstice celebration<\/a>, but this one belongs to the native Zuni and Hopi tribes of North America. It\u2019s also known as Soyaluna or Soyala.<\/p>\n<p>Like Yalda Night, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hraf.yale.edu\/winter-solstice-celebrations-around-the-world\/\">this celebration<\/a> focuses on the return of the sun after the longest night of the year. Ceremonies during the celebration signify bringing the sun back to illuminate the earth, and the entire Soyal lasts for 16 days.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional dances done in masks and costumes, along with songs and prayers, are performed to welcome the <i>kachinas<\/i>, or beneficial spirits that visit people during this time. Gifts, feasting, and traditional cultural stories add to the celebratory atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coptic_Christmas\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_7\">Coptic Christmas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Even Christmas isn\u2019t the same all over the world. While many countries and cultures have their own ways of celebrating Christmas Day, Coptic Christmas is actually celebrated on a different day altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Coptic Christmas is mainly associated with Egypt, but this version of Christmas can also be found <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidscbc2\/the-feed\/whats-the-story-orthodox-christmas\">in other places<\/a>, like Ethiopia, Ukraine, and Russia. Coptic Christmas, also called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/kidscbc2\/the-feed\/whats-the-story-orthodox-christmas\">Orthodox Christmas<\/a>, is based on the Orthodox calendar, which places Christmas on or near January 7th each year. Coptic and Orthodox Christian traditions are somewhat different, but they celebrate Christmas on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>In Egypt and other Coptic countries, Christmas Eve is celebrated with an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-christmas-season-egypt-orthodox-mass\/egypts-coptic-christians-celebrate-christmas-amid-tight-security-idUSKBN1EV0QV\">evening mass<\/a>. People make <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/news\/world\/egypts-coptic-christians-celebrate-christmas-ponder-changing-date\">nativity scenes<\/a> that show baby Jesus as having been born in a cave, not a manger. On Coptic Christmas Day, feasts commemorate the holiday, with traditional dishes of mackerel and tilapia on the menu.
