Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to One Night in Miami<\/em><\/strong>, Oscar-winning actress Regina King<\/strong>\u2018s feature directorial debut. The period piece is based on Kemp Powers<\/strong>\u2018 2013 play, and tells the story of an epic party in 1964 that involved Cassius Clay (before he was known as Muhammad Ali), activist Malcom X, singer Sam Cooke, and football player Jim Brown. While the movie\u2019s exact release date hasn\u2019t been locked down yet, Amazon says it\u2019s looking to release the film later this year \u201cwith an eye towards the awards corridor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone can agree that 2020 is an objectively awful year. But all things considered, it\u2019s a good time to be Regina King. On the heels of her well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for her work in Barry Jenkins\u2019 If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em>, King starred in Damon Lindelof\u2019s Watchmen\u00a0<\/em>(one of the best shows in HBO\u2019s history). This week, she earned an Emmy nomination for that performance, and she seems like a lock to win the category. Now Amazon has picked up her very first film, which sounds pretty amazing. Here\u2019s the official synopsis:<\/p>\n

Set on the\u00a0night\u00a0of February 25, 1964, the story follows a young Cassius Clay (before he became Muhammad Ali) as he emerges from the\u00a0Miami Beach Convention Center the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm\u00a0Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay \u2013 unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws \u2013\u00a0instead spends the\u00a0night\u00a0at the Hampton House Motel\u00a0in one\u00a0of\u00a0Miami\u2019s historically black neighborhoods celebrating with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer\u00a0Sam\u00a0Cooke\u00a0and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0One\u00a0Night\u00a0in\u00a0Miami<\/i>, [writer Kemp Powers] explores what happ<\/a>ened during these pivotal hours through the dynamic relationship between the four men and the way their friendship, paired with their shared struggles, fueled their path to becoming the civil rights icons they are today.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Powers wrote the movie\u2019s screenplay, adapting it from his stage production. Jess\u00a0Wu\u00a0Calder<\/strong> and Keith Calder<\/strong> of Snoot Entertainment (Blindspotting<\/em>, Anomalisa<\/em>, The Guest<\/em>) are producing with\u00a0Jody Klein<\/strong> (The Durrells in Corfu<\/em>) from ABKCO, a music company that has the license to Sam Cooke\u2019s music. The 2013 play featured Cooke\u2019s music, including his famous song \u201cA Change Is Gonna Come,\u201d and ABKCO will release the film version\u2019s original soundtrack album in conjunction with the movie.<\/p>\n

Directing isn\u2019t just a lark for King. She\u2019s been doing it for seven years, stepping behind the camera for episodes of Southland<\/em>, Scandal<\/em>, This is Us<\/em>, Shameless<\/em>, Insecure<\/em>, and more. This film sounds incredible, and I can\u2019t wait to see how it turns out. Amazon will release One Night in Miami<\/em> sometime in late 2020.<\/p>\n
