Harvey, Juanita Rodriguez, <i>Scientific Reports<\/i>.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Scientists have discovered the world&#8217;s first true millipede, a study said Thursday, describing a long, thin and segmented creature with a whopping 1,306 legs\u2014more than any other animal ever.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\">\n         <!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Worm-like creepy critters with hundreds of legs are commonly known as millipedes, a name that roughly translates to &#8220;thousand feet&#8221;\u2014but until now none has ever been found with more than 750.<\/p>\n<p>The record-setting species was discovered 60 metres underground in a drill hole in a mining area in Western Australia and has been dubbed Eumillipes persephone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The species name is from the Greek mythological goddess of the underworld, Persephone, who was originally from the surface but was taken to the underworld by Hades,&#8221; study author Paul Marek of Virginia Tech University told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The string-like creature is less than a millimetre wide but nearly 10 centimetres long and has &#8220;a cone-shaped head with enormous antennae and a beak for feeding&#8221;, the study says.<\/p>\n<p>It also has no eyes and is colourless, traits characteristic of animals that spend their entire lives underground.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The millipede burrows by stretching out its extensible body thereby making it thinner to fit small cracks,&#8221; Marek said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The many legs propel the body and force open small fissures and crevices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2021\/first-millipede-with-m-1.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2021\/first-millipede-with-m-1.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"A dorsal view of head and ventral view of gonopods of a male\u00a0Eumillipes persephone.\u00a0Credit:\u00a0The first true millipede\u20141,306 legs long, Paul E.
