A design consultant herself, Gallo did some investigating: She contacted the manufacturer of the couch, which told her the original order was never placed.<\/p>\n<p>Gallo said ABC apologized, offering her a free brunch at ABC Kitchen. She declined because she said it felt like \u201ca slap in the face. I ordered my couch last November and it has been a mess,\u201d one angry customer posted on Oct. 28 on ABC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> page. \u201cNow no one is answering. Stealing my money and not giving me anything in return!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 124-year-old retailer \u2013 known to generations of New Yorkers for its pricey rugs, trendy furniture and far-out light fixtures \u2013 was bought out of a COVID-driven bankruptcy in October by a consortium that mainly deals in Persian rugs, sources told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, ABC is now sitting on deposits and payments in full for furniture and carpets \u2013 many of them worth thousands of dollars each \u2013 that were placed as far back as a year ago, customers claim. Instead of delivering the goods, ABC has reportedly been ducking angry queries and has even removed its telephone number from its Web site.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the landlord of ABC\u2019s flagship store at 888 Broadway in Manhattan\u2019s trendy Flatiron District is putting pressure on the retailer\u2019s leaseholder, asking a judge to force it to either catch up on rent or clear out of the space, according to recently filed court documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cavernous storefront <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be in disarray \u2013 with all but the ground floor and basement blocked off to customers and mainstays like high-end linens and antique furniture largely missing from the store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=683\" alt=\"An exterior view of 888 Broadway\" class=\"wp-image-20548760\" width=\"363\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=723 726w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=542 544w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=361 363w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=181 181w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_162621-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\"\/><figcaption>Some observers wonder whether the space at 888 Broadway is being prepped for a new tenant.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Daniel William McKnight<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe restored antiques are largely gone and there are hardly any lamps in the store,\u201d observed Kenneth Rosen, a bankruptcy attorney who\u2019d purchased a chandelier from the store a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, there is no explanation for the changes to the store \u2013 leading some to wonder if the space is being prepped for a new tenant altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like the landlord is trying to release the space to someone else and is asking the court to force\u201d ABC out, bankruptcy expert Adam Stein-Sapir said of Columbia Property Trust, which owns 888 Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>An ABC Carpet spokesperson said in a statement to The Post that the company has a long-term lease at 888 Broadway and \u201cis committed to maintaining\u201d the location as its flagship \u2014 even adding back additional floors \u201cin the near future.\u201d ABC said it was \u201cengaging with the landlord\u201d on the space. A representative for the landlord didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>And amid complaints from customers, ABC\u2019s spokesperson said the retailer\u2019s new owners are \u201cfocused on delivering a great shopping experience to customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes one-on-one engagement with valued clients to satisfactorily address open orders and working closely with supplier partners to ensure completion of all orders as soon as possible in light of continued pandemic-related supply chain delays affecting the entire industry,\u201d the spokesperson said, adding that the retailer\u2019s phone number \u201cremains\u201d on the company\u2019s Web site.<\/p>\n<p>ABC was burning through $500,000 a week before its holding company \u2013 controlled by the Weinrib family that had run the storied retailer for more than a century \u2013 declared bankruptcy in September as coronavirus lockdowns walloped store traffic and its bulky furniture pieces failed to move on the Web.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, ABC\u2019s new owners continue to blame the pandemic and related supply-chain problems for the delays in delivering orders already paid for. We assure you this is not our intention and we are committed to honoring every purchase. We are working against global supply chain challenges from the pandemic as well as an internal transition of ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some longtime customers of ABC, its latest mea culpa is too little, too late.<\/p>\n<p>Maryana Grinshpun, who runs a design business, bought a side table and credenza for $5,000 for a client two days before ABC Carpet filed for bankruptcy in September. The tables were sitting on the showroom floor and were supposed to be delivered in October, she told The Post. ABC later told her they were \u201csold out\u201d of those tables.<\/p>\n<p>Like dozens of customers who tried to call the retailer in October and November, Grinshpun found the phone numbers were \u201cdisconnected.\u201d She managed to get a refund from her credit card company \u2013 and told The Post that she\u2019d \u201cnever\u201d purchase from ABC Carpet again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_163651.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Two customers check out furniture\" class=\"wp-image-20548769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_163651.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_163651.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_163651.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2021_12_19_163651.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Shoppers might want to take their purchases with them as many customers complain their deliveries never arrived.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Daniel William McKnight<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another customer wrote on Facebook last month: \u201cI paid in full for a sofa and ottoman in February.\u201d The customer was told by her credit card company to contact ABC, but she noted \u201cABC took their phone number off their Web site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The iconic retailer had been headed before its bankruptcy by Paulette Cole, a great-granddaughter of founder Sam Weinrib, who retains a minority stake in the new ownership structure.<\/p>\n<p>The lease for ABC is held by a separate company owned by Cole; that company, AMMA421, remains in bankruptcy and has said in court filings that it can\u2019t pay rent.<\/p>\n<p>Already shrunk from six to three floors and the basement, the store recently closed the second and third floors and the balcony on the first floor where it had sold lamps and furniture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The carpets have been moved from the upper floors to the basement and the ground floor, where they were never displayed previously. The elevator bank and staircase by the Broadway entrance have been boarded up and a new, modern elevator bank was installed at the back of the store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no sign saying \u2018Watch for the grand reopening of the second and third floors,&#8217;\u201d Rosen pointed out. \u201cI had the feeling that the building was \u2013 or has been \u2013 renovated in contemplation of it being leased to another retailer.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
