exciting, and . . . expensive. After you\u2019ve built a few desktops, all those new boxes of Corsair, NVIDIA, and Intel gear can lose their luster\u2014especially after you tally up the bill.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_You_Really_Need_All-New_Parts\"><\/span>Do You Really Need All-New Parts?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the time, when it comes to a new PC, people think new parts, and for good reason. When you\u2019re building a new desktop, you want a machine that offers better performance than the one you had before. However, that doesn\u2019t mean some parts can\u2019t be reused.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the major PC pieces from most to least reusable, as well as some of the other considerations for each.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keep_the_Peripherals\"><\/span>Keep the Peripherals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, if you\u2019re building a new PC, you can save money by keeping your old peripherals. These include your monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, webcam, headphones, and all other gadgets. Even if you want to upgrade, it\u2019s easy to buy something later and plug it in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Where You Should Splurge When Building a PC (and Where You Shouldn&#8217;t)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Top_Candidates_to_Keep\"><\/span>Top Candidates to Keep<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following components are the easiest to keep in a new build. If you have a quality model that\u2019s still in good shape, there\u2019s no reason to change it.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you have an old-school case (see first image above), changing it is a good idea. These include both older PCs, and newer, prebuilt boxes from Dell, HP, and Lenovo.<\/p>\n<p>These older style cases weren\u2019t really built with user-friendliness in mind. For the most part, all the components are stuffed in, the lid is closed, and everything is forgotten. Sometimes, these cases might not even take a standard size motherboard, which is a key consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Modern cases, on the other hand, make it easy to mount components, obtain proper airflow, and are built with cable management in mind.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a modern case that takes care of all these features, though, there\u2019s no real reason to change it out. The only exceptions would be if the case is broken, the internal wiring for the front panel no longer works, or you want a case with a front panel and a Type-C port.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re keeping the old case, you can keep the fans, too, if they still work. Just be sure to give them a good cleaning. If you\u2019re not keeping the case, see if the old fans will fit in your new one. If you\u2019ve had a quality PSU for more than two years, you can guess which camp you fall into.<\/p>\n<p>PSUs are well worth keeping under a few circumstances. The first is if they\u2019re still under warranty. Quality PSUs can have a warranty of up to 10 years, so these things can last for multiple builds.<\/p>\n<p>The other issue is, of course, power. Do you have an old PSU with enough wattage to power the more advanced monster you\u2019re building? If not, then it\u2019s time to switch.<\/p>\n<p>One last issue for PSUs is whether you have a modular, or semi- or non-modular unit. If you have a non-modular, consider switching.<\/p>\n<p>Fully modular and semi-modular PSUs allow you more freedom to pick and choose which cables you need in your PC. This reduces the amount of clutter, which is better for cable management. It also makes it easier to close the back panel when you\u2019ve finished the build.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maybe_Keep\"><\/span>Maybe Keep<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After the no-brainers, we get to the \u201cwell, I guess you can keep them\u201d variety. The following components will probably work fine, but might not provide the boost in performance you want from a new PC.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Graphics_Card\"><\/span><strong>The Graphics Card<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-688943 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/EVGA1050.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"A compact EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card.\" width=\"650\" height=\"300\" data-credittext=\"EVGA\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">EVGA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The graphics card is one of the easiest components to make a decision about. If you only need it to play a single <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, like\u00a0<em>Civilization VI<\/em>, then you can keep your GPU, as long as the game still runs well.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to play the latest red-hot titles, though, check the minimum specs for each game. You\u2019ll quickly get a sense of how long you\u2019ve got before you\u2019ll need to replace that graphics card.<\/p>\n<p>Once the minimum specs for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le-A games surpass your graphics card\u2019s model number, it\u2019s time to switch. However, you can probably squeeze in one or two more rounds of game releases if you\u2019re particularly tight on cash.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping the old card only <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lies to those who are willing to accept between 30 and 60 frames per second at 1080p. If you want more than 60 FPS, a higher resolution, or the latest gaming features (like real-time ray tracing), then you need a new graphics card.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Storage\"><\/span><strong>Storage<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-665605 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hard-drive-head-and-platter.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"An exposed hard drive platter with the read\/write head over top it.\" width=\"650\" height=\"302\" data-credittext=\"Shutterstock\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yes, you can reuse storage drives. In many ways, they\u2019re probably the easiest parts to transfer between machines. We do have a few caveats, though, which is why we didn\u2019t include them in the \u201cKeep\u201d section.<\/p>\n<p>One drive you probably shouldn\u2019t keep using is your primary boot drive. It works hard and is the most likely candidate for failure. Besides, with NVMe prices falling, you can find solid deals on fantastic drives.<\/p>\n<p>If your secondary hard drives and SSDs are running fine, they might be candidates for reuse. Just make sure they\u2019re not about to die by checking their S.M.A.R.T. statistics. A good S.M.A.R.T. rating doesn\u2019t guarantee a drive won\u2019t fail, but it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly a good guide.<\/p>\n<p>Another good rule of thumb is to replace your drives after about five years or so. If you\u2019re going to roll the dice and use an older drive, be sure you\u00a0have a solid backup plan to protect your data from a sudden catastrophe.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"RAM\"><\/span>RAM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Reusing RAM is possible, since it\u2019s such a stable part. RAM types don\u2019t change as often as CPU and GPU generations do. If you do keep the RAM, make sure it\u2019s compatible with your motherboard. For example, if you have DDR3 RAM, it definitely won\u2019t work in a DDR4 motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that RAM prices are also looking sane again. If you\u2019re saving money by reusing other parts, you might want to upgrade your RAM, or even splurge on some snazzy RGB RAM for a sleeker look.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CPU_Coolers\"><\/span><strong>CPU Coolers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>CPU coolers can be expensive. If the old one is in particularly good shape, then you might be able to reuse it. You\u2019ll have to make sure it\u2019s powerful enough to cool your new CPU, though (check the TDP). It will also need to fit the socket on your new motherboard.<\/p>\n<p>Also, do keep in mind that of all the parts you don\u2019t want to fail, this is a major one. If it does, it can damage that pricey new CPU. If you\u2019re building a new PC, you probably shouldn\u2019t\u00a0keep the CPU, even if it\u2019s working fine.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t use it for a second system with a bunch of spare parts, just don\u2019t use it in your new PC. The CPU is one of the key drivers of PC performance, which is why you\u2019re building a new rig in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, if you keep the CPU, you\u2019re probably also keeping the motherboard, since finding a new one for an old CPU can be a pain. Plus, if you\u2019re keeping the CPU and motherboard, then you\u2019re definitely in \u201cupgrade,\u201d rather than \u201cnew build\u201d territory.<\/p>\n<p>There are exceptions, though.
