Telescopes like James Webb and its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, see light from distant stars and galaxies emitted eons ago. Thus they see back into the past. Now, the world\u2019s premier\u00a0space\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>\u00a0observatory \u2014 considered a successor to the Hubble \u2014 is set to launch into orbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following delays including one that pushed its launch from Christmas Eve, the $10 billion Webb \u2014 an international partnership with the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency \u2014 is targeted to lift off on the morning of Dec. 25 on an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket from Europe\u2019s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" rocket had to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/webbLaunch\/assets\/documents\/WebbMediaKit.pdf\">For a mission duration of up to 10 years<\/a>, the Webb will \u201ccomplement and extend the discoveries of [Hubble] with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity.\u201d It will explore a time period known as the \u201cEpoch of Reionization,\u201d which came after the dark ages following the Big Bang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer wavelengths enable Webb to look much closer to the beginning of time and to hunt for the unobserved formation of the first galaxies, as well as to look inside dust clouds where stars and\u00a0planetary\u00a0systems are forming today,\u201d the agency said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/about\/index.html\">Astronomers worldwide<\/a>\u00a0will use the Webb, and its science objectives require the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/about\/faqs\/facts.html\">Webb infrared observatory<\/a>\u00a0to be very large \u2014 so large that it can\u2019t fit into the nose cone of any available launch vehicle in its operational configuration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once in space, Webb\u2019s sunshield \u2014 which is the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/webbLaunch\/assets\/documents\/WebbFactSheet.pdf\">size of a tennis court<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 will expand and separate into its five also too wide to fit into the Ariane 5 fairing in one piece, so it is segmented into 18 hexagonal pieces on a hinged structure so it can fold up for launch and unfold in space. It will be the largest mirror ever flown into space,\u201d NASA said in a document detailing the telescope and its launch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How much detail a telescope can see is directly related to the size of the mirror area that collects light from the objects being observed.
