\n City Council Speaker Corey Johnson says he didn\u2019t kill funding for the activist group VOCAL-NY because several of its members and staff targeted his boyfriend\u2019s home for a protest, and we have no cause to doubt him.<\/p>\n

But it would be ample reason to cut off funds. Heck, targeting CoJo\u2019s own residence, or any decision-maker\u2019s, would be enough.<\/p>\n

Public officials still have a right to privacy, no matter how sanctimoniously self-righteous their critics may become. Besieging their homes is an assault on civil society and democratic norms.<\/p>\n

That also app<\/a>lies to the demonstrations on Sen. Chuck Schumer\u2019s street and the recent protest at Police Commissioner Dermot Shea\u2019s residence. It\u2019s all nothing less than an attempt at mob rule.<\/p>\n

Certainly, no one taking a public protest to a private residence should get a dime of taxpayer money.<\/p>\n

VOCAL-NY led protests as Johnson negotiated the new city budget, demonstrations that culminated in the Occupy City Hall encampment. And VOCAL staff joined a march to the home of Johnson\u2019s S.O. \u2014 a protest that saw vandalism of the building (which the boyfriend doesn\u2019t own) and ringing buzzers in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n

Johnson was rightly angry: \u201cHe\u2019s not a public figure; I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s no clear sign that\u2019s why the council axed a previously-OK\u2019d $2.25 million for VOCAL to buy a new building in Brooklyn: Lots of grants vanished as the city closed its coronavirus-caused $9 billion shortfall.<\/p>\n

VOCAL claims CoJo has attacked \u201cour First Amendment rights to speak truth to power\u201d and threatens to sue. Good luck.<\/p>\n

Nobody has a right to \u201ca permanent home to build political power\u201d at taxpayer expense \u2014 and VOCAL\u2019s vile behavior has forfeited any reason to indulge its complaints.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
