As a rising art star in Los Angeles, New York City and Vienna,<strong> <\/strong>he got into the good graces of dealers, collectors and fellow artists, who were reportedly enamored of his loose, abstract style of work that fell into the category of \u201czombie formalism.\u201d<strong> <\/strong>A writer in Artnet described Rosa\u2019s art as a \u201clightbulb of visual pleasure turning on.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always nice to us and a good artist,\u201d Michael Hort, a New York-based collector who bought a half-dozen or so of Rosa\u2019s pieces, told The Post. \u201cWay before he got in trouble \u2026 he was extremely friendly and generous. We liked his work and when we like an artist\u2019s work we buy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among his boosters, reportedly, was Raymond Pettibon, famous for having created the logo for the punk band Black Flag and record cover illustrations for groups like Sonic Youth and Foo Fighters. Pettibon\u2019s coveted canvases now sell for as much as $1.2 million through top dealer David Zwirner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of Instagram evidence that they were friends and that [Pettibon] was [Rosa\u2019s] mentor,\u201d Joseph Ian Henrikson, founder of Manhattan\u2019s Anonymous Gallery, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2021\/10\/christian-rosa-indictment-disappearance\">told Vanity Fair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a show at The Hole gallery in Manhattan, the two artists painted one another\u2019s portrait. They were known to gamble together at the dog track and swap their art. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/raymond-pettibon.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Raymond Pettibon rose to fame in the art world. Great artists and kind, genuine people. You made my day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little did Pettibon, now 64,<strong> <\/strong>know, though, that his pal Rosa was in the midst of perpetrating a nervy, high-flying fraud against him.<\/p>\n<p>But two years later, on Oct. 14, 2021, Pettibon retweeted something else about his former mentee: \u201cThe artist Christian Rosa was charged with selling forgeries of Raymond Pettibon\u2019s work.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to an indictment issued by United States District Court, Southern District of New York, Christian Rosa Weinberger, aka Christian Rosa, engaged in a \u201cscheme to sell forged Raymond Pettibon artworks.\u201d The works in question are based on Pettibon\u2019s highly regarded \u201cWave Series\u201d of paintings, depicting gigantic curls of water, sometimes engulfing surfers, with pithy text \u2014 \u201cAre your motives pure?\u201d one asks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-fake1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Pettibon's friend, Christian Rosa has been charged in with fraud in this known replica.\" class=\"wp-image-20600333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-fake1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-fake1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-fake1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Artnet reported in January 2021 that the secondary art market was suspicious of a Pettibon work that had \u201cseemingly strange\u201d colors, misplacement of text and a too-careful signature.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">SDNY<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The alleged criminal activity \u2014 described in the indictment as \u201ca scheme to defraud potential art buyers\u201d \u2014 is said to have run from 2017 until 2020. As outlined in the court<strong> <\/strong>documents, around 2018, an unnamed collector arranged Rosa\u2019s sale of two works to a third party, who paid six figures<strong> <\/strong>via wire transfer. The works came complete with bogus certificates of authenticity.<\/p>\n<p>Two more forged paintings were then sold to the collector. An art insider in LA expressed surprise to The Post that Rosa was able to convincingly copy Pettibon\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>But Hort, who, in addition to owning work by Rosa, has some 45 Pettibon pieces, found it more believable. \u201cPettibon is easy to knock off,\u201d said Hort, co-founder of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.remahortmannfoundation.org\/\">Rema Hort Mann Foundation<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re easy to replicate. They are not that complicated, though you keep going back and finding new things to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a possibly unrelated event, professional gambler Rick Salomon had a Pettibon pulled from auction in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone sold me [a Pettibon] painting. I traded a real, smaller Pettibon for it plus cash. It was an upgrade, I thought. Then I decided I didn\u2019t love it \u2026 [and] was going to put it in auction,\u201d Salomon told The Post via text. \u201cThe seller said they were going to sue me [for auctioning it]. I never signed a piece of paper saying I couldn\u2019t sell or put [it] in auction. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I thought this was weird, my friend threatening to sue me. I \u2026 put it in auction. My understanding is that Pettibon called the auction house and said it\u2019s fake.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-rosa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"What started out as friendship between Raymond Pettibon (left) and Christian Rosa (right) has now devolved into a legal battle between the two artists.\" class=\"wp-image-20600339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-rosa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-rosa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/pettibon-rosa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Pettibon (left) was reportedly a mentor to Rosa (right), and the two would sometimes go gambling at the dog track.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images (2)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Quoted in the indictment is a \u201cco-conspirator\u201d of Rosa\u2019s, who wondered why it was taking so long for a deal to be consummated. <\/p>\n<p>Rosa explained the need to find a buyer who would agree to hold onto the work and not risk exposing its lack of authenticity through the scrutiny of auction house specialists. \u201cI am not trying to get busted,\u201d he replied to the person via text. \u201cSo that\u2019s why it\u2019s takeing [sic] so long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the indictment, Rosa spent proceeds from the second deal \u201cto make the down payment and subsequent mortgage payments on a residence in California.\u201d On March 9, 2020, the NW Riverside <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nwriversidenews.com\/stories\/547669972-sophie-helene-severin-and-christian-georges-weinberger-acquire-2635-anna-st-riverside-for-1-14m\">reported<\/a> that Rosa and fashion model Helena Severin had purchased a five-bedroom house in Riverside, Calif., for $1.135 million.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 29, 2021, Artnet <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/wet-paint-christian-rosa-raymond-pettibon-1940051\">broke news<\/a> that a Pettibon being shopped to art advisors on the secondary market was raising suspicions. Dealers were reportedly made uneasy by irregularities in the work \u2014 what Artnet described as \u201cseemingly strange yellow-greens blended into Pettibon\u2019s normal cobalt blues,\u201d misplacement of text and a too-careful signature. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/album-covers.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Pettibon rose to fame with creating album covers for such bands such as Sonic Youth (left) Foo Fighters (center) and creating the iconic logo for punk bank Black Flag (right).\" class=\"wp-image-20600362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/album-covers.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/album-covers.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/album-covers.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Pettibon rose to fame for illustrating album covers for Sonic Youth and the Foo Fighters and by creating the iconic logo for punk bank Black Flag.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The article referred to \u201cmultiple sources\u201d who maintained that Rosa purloined an unfinished work from Pettibon\u2019s studio, \u201callegedly finished the work\u201d and \u201cconsigned it to the secondary market as the owner, as if it were a genuine item.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rosa reacted to the news by messaging his co-conspirator: \u201cThe secret is out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A couple days later, according to the indictment, Rosa emailed Pettibon and said that the work was an \u201coverpainted print.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Weeks after the Artnet exposure<strong>,<\/strong>  Rosa fled the United States. A few months later, the Riverside home he shared with Severin was sold. The indictment alleges that an attempt was made to \u201ctransfer the funds abroad.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/christian-rosa2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Following a lawsuit against him, Rosa fled to Portugal, was arrested and extradited to the US.\" class=\"wp-image-20600483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/christian-rosa2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/christian-rosa2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/christian-rosa2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Rosa\u2019s own work was reportedly collected by A-listers such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jay-Z.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vanity Fair reported Rosa calling a friend during this time and describing himself as \u201cAmerica\u2019s most wanted.\u201d The artist\u2019s undoing may have come when Severin posted an Instagram picture that showed a bottle of Mil Fontes water, a local brand that revealed her location on the Alentejo coast in Portugal. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Rosa was arrested in Portugal and extradited to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Art world insiders point out that Rosa enjoyed a rapid, if reckless, rise, which made his landing particularly hard to handle \u2014 and may have contributed to him taking desperate measures. <\/p>\n<p>Born in Rio de Janeiro, he has said that he and his family<strong> <\/strong>later moved to Vienna \u201cbecause Brazil was so dangerous.\u201d Rosa showed up in Los Angeles around 2010. One early benefactor, Stefan Simchowitz, a collector and gallerist in LA, liked Rosa\u2019s art enough that, at that time, he rented an apartment for Rosa and bought him art supplies in exchange for work. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/raymond-pettibon2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Pettibon was Rosa's mentor until the relationship soured.\" class=\"wp-image-20600568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/raymond-pettibon2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/raymond-pettibon2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/raymond-pettibon2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Pettibon retweeted an announcement that Rosa had been charged with selling forgeries of his work.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to be having dinner with a bunch of friends, including Hugh Grant,\u201d Simchowitz told The Post. \u201c[Rosa] came, was charming and told me he was broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Simchowitz, the friendship ended badly, with Rosa failing to deliver on the promised art, even as his gallery shows piled up and prices increased. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll [Christian] did was take advantage of people,\u201d claimed Simchowitz who said he got into a shoving match with Rosa while being filmed for a German documentary. \u201cThere is an idea that artists are always the victims but there are circumstances where artists do not fulfill their obligations. Artists can be very unethical. They can do crazy things and, under the protection of being artists, take unethical stands.\u00a0Christian was highly unethical. I had to threaten him with litigation. It was in a garage with a [large] photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger oiled down during his body-building days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That<strong> <\/strong>lawsuit<strong> <\/strong>was filed in 2014 and the following year, according to Vanity Fair, Rosa \u201cclosed on a new 11,000-square-foot studio space\u201d in downtown LA. A-listers like Jay-Z and Leonardo DiCaprio were collecting his work. In 2014, a piece of his fetched $209,000 at Christies. Hort believes Rosa \u201clived at that level\u201d \u2014\u00a0that of an artist whose work routinely sells in the six figures<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the market crashed,\u201d Hort added. Rosa\u2019s works were going for more like  $30,000. \u201cHe got stuck.
