\n \u201cI\u2019d be such a bad teammate right now,\u201d CC Sabathia, a Hall of Fame teammate throughout his 19 years in Major League Baseball, said Friday evening while laughing.\u201d I would be complaining about everything. It\u2019s almost good in a way that I\u2019m not in there right now just because of everything that\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The slimmed-down lefty is still here right now, though, just not full-time. The Yankees\u2019 special advisor, who retired at the end of last season, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the team\u2019s home-opening 5-1 win over the Red Sox at the Stadium. And he\u2019s still acting like a teammate, counseling the players as they receive more institutional support to make statements about social<\/a> justice. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Hicks both knelt during the national anthem before the Yankees\u2019 July 25 game<\/a> at Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cI talk to a lot of guys across the league, from Mookie Betts to Tim Anderson to Dexter Fowler to Hicksy and G,\u201d said Sabathia, who app<\/a>eared with these players and others in The Players Alliance public-service announcement. \u201cSo I\u2019m pretty involved. It\u2019s been awesome to be a part of what these guys have going on. I think the time is right to make a stand and try to make some change. Anything that they want to get together and do with peaceful protest, I think we\u2019re all for. So it\u2019s just been fun to be in some of those conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The coronavirus has limited the scope of Sabathia\u2019s new gig. \u201cObviously not having a minor-league season kind of hurts whatever I was going to do, trying to go down and help guys and see the guys,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I look forward to picking that up whenever everything resumes and gets back to whatever normal\u2019s going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

This current brand of normal, as Sabathia indicated, would not appeal to him. \u201cSo I commend these guys for going out and playing obviously during this pandemic,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I don\u2019t know if it would be for me. So it\u2019s best that I\u2019m in the role that I\u2019m in.\u201d<\/p>\n

He confirmed that with his actions as well as his words. Sabathia\u2019s first pitch bounced before reaching his catcher Gerrit Cole. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the furthest I\u2019ve thrown a ball since that playoff game,\u201d Sabathia said referring to Game 4 of last year\u2019s American League Championship Series<\/a> at Yankee Stadium, when he walked off the mound in agony after injuring his arm. \u201cObviously I\u2019m not ready to throw from a mound yet, so it reinforces my decision to retire.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
