Oscar<\/a>-nominated director Jean-Marc Vall\u00e9e<\/a>, who directed the HBO series<\/a> Big Little Lies<\/em> and Sharp Objects<\/em>, has died at his cabin outside Quebec City, Canada. He was 58. According to Deadline<\/em><\/a>, Vall\u00e9e\u2019s family and close advisors are in shock at the sudden loss. A cause of death has not been confirmed publicly as of yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cJean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy,\u201d said his producing partner Nathan Ross (via Variety<\/em><\/a>). \u201cEveryone who worked with him couldn\u2019t help but see the talent and vision he possessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ross continued, \u201cHe was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vall\u00e9e was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and studied filmmaking at the Coll\u00e8ge Ahuntsic and the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. He started his career directing music videos before going on to direct several short films that received critical interest. He made his feature-length debut in 1995 with Black List,<\/em> which became the highest-grossing film in Quebec that year and received several Genie Award nominations.<\/p>\n

Following his breakout film C.R.A.Z.Y.<\/em>, Vall\u00e9e was hired by Graham King and Martin Scorsese to direct the period drama film The Young Victoria<\/em>. But it was 2013\u2019s Dallas Buyers Club<\/em> that earned him his biggest success, with the film receiving multiple Oscar nominations, including a Best Film Editing nomination for Vall\u00e9e under his alias, John Mac McMurphy.<\/p>\n

In recent years, Vall\u00e9e turned his attention to television work. He directed the first season of David E. Kelley\u2019s<\/a> Big Little Lies<\/em>, starring Reese Witherspoon, who Vall\u00e9e had worked with years earlier on the movie Wild<\/em>. He received the DGA Award and the Primetime Emmy<\/a> Award for Outstanding Directing for his work on the series.<\/p>\n

Vall\u00e9e would return to HBO in 2019 to direct Marti Noxon\u2019s psychological thriller Sharp Objects<\/em>, which was nominated for eight Emmys. Vall\u00e9e was also set to direct another HBO series, Gorilla and the Bird<\/em>, based on a memoir by Zack McDermott about a public defender who suffers a sudden psychotic break that takes him on a harrowing journey of delusions and antisocial<\/a> behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cJean-Marc Vall\u00e9e was a brilliant, fiercely dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who infused every scene with a deeply visceral, emotional truth,\u201d said a statement released by HBO (via Deadline<\/em>). \u201cHe was also a hugely caring man who invested his whole self alongside every actor he directed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are shocked at the news<\/a> of his sudden death, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his sons, Alex and \u00c9mile, his extended family, and his longtime producing partner, Nathan Ross.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
