{"id":386437,"date":"2021-12-27T21:09:52","date_gmt":"2021-12-27T18:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/tiktok-moderators-claim-ptsd-over-clips\/"},"modified":"2021-12-27T21:09:52","modified_gmt":"2021-12-27T18:09:52","slug":"tiktok-moderators-claim-ptsd-over-clips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/tiktok-moderators-claim-ptsd-over-clips\/","title":{"rendered":"#TikTok moderators claim &#8216;PTSD&#8217; over clips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#TikTok moderators claim &#8216;PTSD&#8217; over clips<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/tiktok-lawsuit-content-moderation-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Former TikTok moderator Candie Frazier has seen the worst the internet has to offer. <\/p>\n<p>Now, she\u2019s suing the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> company for neglect, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/12\/24\/22852817\/tiktok-content-moderation-lawsuit-candie-frazier\">the Verge has reported<\/a>, alleging that they ignored the mental well-being of its moderators, who watched \u201cthousands of acts of extreme and graphic violence\u201d on the job.<\/p>\n<p>Frazier is part of a pending class-action lawsuit filed against ByteDance, who owns TikTok, in the California Central District Court. While working for a\u00a0third-party contracting firm, Telus International, Frazier and her colleagues witnessed countless hours of potentially offensive footage, including, allegedly, rape, animal cruelty, cannibalism and mass murder.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok has not responded to The Post\u2019s request for comment. But spokesperson Hilary McQuaide said in a statement to the Verge: \u201cOur Safety team partners with third party firms on the critical work of helping to protect the TikTok platform and community, and we continue to expand on a range of wellness services so that moderators feel supported mentally and emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Stanley Kubrick-esque depiction of aversion therapy a la \u201cClockwork Orange,\u201d their allegedly punishing review process entailed new video assignments every 25 seconds, so moderators were forced to watch between three and 10 videos simultaneously to keep up with the untenable pace. Their 12-hour shifts include one 1-hour break, then as many as five 15-minute breaks accrued throughout the day, they claim.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NQx83_JkrZw\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NQx83_JkrZw<\/a><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Frazier said she\u2019s suffered \u201csevere psychological trauma including depression and symptoms associated with anxiety and PTSD\u201d as a result of her work with TikTok. According to the lawsuit, she has \u201ctrouble sleeping and when she does sleep, she has horrific nightmares. She often lays awake at night trying to go to sleep, replaying videos that she has seen in her mind. She has severe and debilitating panic attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed by California\u2019s Joseph Saveri Law Firm, would have TikTok and its partners offering more frequent breaks, psychological support and visual safeguards, such as blurring.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>TikTok is only the latest social media company to hear criticism over their content moderation policy. Other social media companies have been accused of failing to safeguard against harmful content, or doing harm to its moderators. <\/p>\n<p>Joseph Saveri attorneys recently won a $52 million settlement from Facebook in a similar lawsuit launched in 2018 on behalf of moderators, including one plaintiff who said he developed PTSD after being forced to watch child porn on the platform.
