slammed the Windows maker in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p> Now, though, Microsoft faces its own pressure, though not nearly to the extent of Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.82%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.30%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Google parent Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.67%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.63%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       and Meta Platforms Inc.<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.26%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       But the scrutiny Microsoft does face comes from overseas instead of the U.S.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Microsoft has made no specific public comments on legislation or lawsuits, since none of them are overtly aimed at the software giant, but Microsoft President Brad Smith \u2014 the point person in Microsoft\u2019s blame-deflection strategy \u2014 acknowledged the unfolding regulatory climate in an internal company memo in June viewed by MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is changing, and Microsoft will change with it,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhile our mission to empower others remains constant, governments and countries today expect more and different things from us. We\u2019re clearly entering an era of rapidly expanding global <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> regulation. But we\u2019ve been adapting to new legal obligations for almost two decades. We\u2019ve learned what it means to change in a responsible and even proactive way. We\u2019re well positioned to put our technology to use, so we can do more than ever to help customers grow, succeed, and contribute to a better world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Translated for its rivals: Microsoft has overplayed the antitrust card to make up ground in key technology areas such as mobile and gaming, where Microsoft has lagged behind its rivals, but doesn\u2019t seem too worried about being targeted itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: Microsoft\u2019s shadowy presence in antitrust push is angering the rest of Big Tech<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like its Big Tech brethren, Microsoft for years has expanded its business reach through acquisitions in advertising and video<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s. But over the past 18 months, the software behemoth has avoided the regulatory lawsuits and investigations that have ensnared the other Big Tech firms. Microsoft and its defenders attribute the white-glove treatment by regulators to the company abiding by the rules after its tussle with the Justice Department more than two decades ago. <\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetRichText\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetRichText\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object-rich-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_on_the_antitrust_challenges_facing_Big_Tech_in_2022\"><\/span>More on the antitrust challenges facing Big Tech in 2022<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li> Big Tech heads for \u2018a year of thousands of tiny tech papercuts,\u2019 but what antitrust efforts could make them bleed?<\/li>\n<li> Amazon has mostly avoided antitrust scrutiny, but that may change in 2022<\/li>\n<li> Possible Justice Department lawsuit looms over Apple, which is facing scrutiny worldwide<\/li>\n<li> Google enters 2022 battling antitrust actions on multiple fronts \u2014 with more likely to come<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>\u2019s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp are antitrust targets, but its metaverse mergers may be the victims<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Historians may also be more inclined to accept Microsoft\u2019s reasoning that the previous antitrust investigation opened the door for Google and Facebook to eventually emerge as strong competitors. The historic skirmish ended with a 1999 district court ruling that Microsoft\u2019s actions constituted unlawful monopolization under Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. A federal appeals court affirmed most of the court\u2019s judgments. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft provides a lot of lessons that are overlooked in today\u2019s antitrust discussion. Microsoft\u2019s market dominance and ability to use its business model to create barriers to entry and thwart competition was overestimated,\u201d Ashley Baker, director of public policy at the Committee for Justice, told MarketWatch. \u201cDue to reasons unrelated to the antitrust case, none of the predicted harms to consumers ever became a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This may be true in the U.S., but overseas Microsoft is the target of a complaint from Nextcloud, an open-source cloud-software company in Europe.<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/antitrust.nextcloud.com\/\" class=\"icon none\"> Nextcloud alleges<\/a> Microsoft\u2019s bundling of Teams and OneDrive into Windows 11 violates competition laws. Nextcloud said a coalition of companies is joining its effort.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Nextcloud\u2019s case is reminiscent of Saleforce.com Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        CRM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200515854\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.04%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Slack, which filed a similar complaint with European authorities in July over Microsoft\u2019s bundling of Teams into Office.<\/p>\n<p>A Microsoft spokesperson said of Nextcloud\u2019s complaint: \u201cPeople expect modern operating systems to provide secure and reliable communication and storage services whether they\u2019re using a computer, tablet or phone from any provider. This enables people to connect with each other and share and access files across multiple devices and keeps their documents and photos safe if a device breaks.
