advertised Google Workspace now online, you may find yourself wondering whether it\u2019s time to leave open-source <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice<\/a> behind and switch to something a bit more corporate. We compare the two to see which may be the better fit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Is Google Workspace, and Does It Fully Replace G Suite?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Workspace_vs_LibreOffice_The_Big_Picture\"><\/span>Google Workspace vs LibreOffice: The Big Picture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before we look at how the separate <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s like the word processor and spreadsheet perform, we may want to go over some of the overarching differences between these two suites. One large difference is cost: LibreOffice is free, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/workspace.google.com\/pricing.html\">Google Workspace starts<\/a> at $6 per month, and goes up as your business size and needs increase. Free is obviously better, but you may find Workspace\u2019s benefits worth the price.<\/p>\n<p>Another big difference is that Google Workspace is entirely online, while LibreOffice is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/68324\/most-useful-offline-apps\/\">totally offline<\/a>. While it may not seem like that big a deal at first glance, once you have used the one for a while and then switch to the other, it feels completely different. For one, saving or making backups is completely unnecessary when using Workspace. All your work is saved automatically pretty much the moment you do it, and it saves several versions of each file, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-771715 alignnone\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/google-versioning.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Google Docs versioning\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When using LibreOffice, it\u2019s like going back in time: you need to hit Ctrl+S buttons every few minutes to make sure that your work is saved\u2014autosave works, but only at certain intervals\u2014and if you want versioning, you\u2019ll need to create different files for the same document.<\/p>\n<p>You also have a problem if something happens to your computer: unless you\u2019re backed up, those files are gone for good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-771713\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/libre-save-650x490.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"LibreOffice versioning\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sharing_Is_Easier_Online\"><\/span>Sharing Is Easier Online<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another huge advantage to always being online is sharing: you can easily share any file or document in Google Workspace with anybody else, though they will need a Google email\u2014Gmail is fine. When shared, you can write in the same document at the same time (\u201ccollaborate in real time\u201d to use marketing speak) and leave comments for each other, it\u2019s great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-771712\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/google-sharing.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Google Docs sharing screen\" width=\"638\" height=\"382\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sharing a LibreOffice file is more cumbersome and reminds you of the days of yore: you need to save the file in the correct format\u2014if you send an ODT file to a Mac user you\u2019re gonna have a bad time\u2014and then send it via email. They then make their changes and leave comments, and you both hope the comments survive the transition between different suites. It\u2019s a pain.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joys_of_Being_Offline\"><\/span>Joys of Being Offline<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite all that, though, there\u2019s still something to be said for being offline. For one, you don\u2019t need to worry about running out of storage space. While Google offers free users a pretty generous 15GB of space (putting it among the best free cloud storage), your hard drive beats that easily, even if you\u2019re on a mediocre laptop.<\/p>\n<p>The second, more important advantage is that you\u2019re in control of your files. If your Workspace account suddenly gets canceled for some reason, or you lose access\u2014like if you lose your password\u2014then your documents are gone, too. Getting them back is still possible, but it may take some time. This won\u2019t happen to files on your hard drive unless your drive itself completely breaks down.<\/p>\n<p>However, the biggest advantage of all is the sense of privacy that comes with maintaining local storage. You don\u2019t have to trust your files to a cloud provider like Google, although <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/a\/answer\/60762?hl=en\">Google promises to protect your privacy<\/a>. If you prefer not trusting another organization with your files, offline is the way to go.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comparing_Workspace_and_LibreOffice_Apps\"><\/span>Comparing Workspace and LibreOffice Apps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Turning away from the bigger picture, let\u2019s take a look at what the apps within each suite can do. We\u2019re going to focus here on the word processor and the spreadsheet as those are the most popular. Other shared programs between the two are slide show apps, but those seem about equal.<\/p>\n<p>LibreOffice has no equivalent to Google Forms, which is a pity. It\u2019s also worth noting, though, that Workspace doesn\u2019t have a drawing program or anything focused specifically on formatting mathematical and scientific equations like LibreOffice Math.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LibreOffice_Writer_vs_Google_Docs\"><\/span>LibreOffice Writer vs. Google Docs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Google Docs is a great little word processor if all you need is to write and maybe add some basic stuff such as tables and the like. In fact, this article\u2019s first draft was written in Google Docs as it\u2019s just a great program that gets you writing within seconds of booting it up for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-771711\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GoogleDocs-650x394.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Google Docs\" width=\"640\" height=\"388\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>However, if basic text formatting and a few, admittedly ugly, tables aren\u2019t enough for you, then LibreOffice Writer is the far better choice. Where Google Docs is basically just an app that lets you write, LibreOffice Writer is much more like Microsoft Word in that it has a lot of options and even lets you mess around with the layout of a page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-771709\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/libreoffice-writer-main-650x284.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"LibreOffice Writer\" width=\"640\" height=\"280\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you like or need all these extra doodads, then LibreOffice is a great choice, especially if you\u2019re not interested in using Microsoft Office (we have compared LibreOffice against Microsoft Office). If you just want to write a whole bunch, then Google Docs is better. However, large documents (say, anything over 50-60 pages) take a long time to load on Google Docs, even on fast connections. LibreOffice performs much better, assuming your processor is up to scratch.<\/p>\n<p>One last note about LibreOffice is that it doesn\u2019t have the most common fonts included, while Google Docs has. If you\u2019re a big fan of Times New Roman, Arial, or any other conventional type of letter, you\u2019re going to have to import them to get them to work on LibreOffice. Not a huge deal, but worth knowing.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LibreOffice_Calc_vs_Google_Sheets\"><\/span>LibreOffice Calc vs. Google Sheets<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The simplicity that makes Google Docs attractive actually hurts its sibling, Google Sheets, Workspace\u2019s spreadsheet app. Though it does an okay job\u2014and really just okay\u2014if all you want to do is tabulate some basic data, anything involving more than just some simple formulas is going to leave you annoyed and frustrated. It just doesn\u2019t have the oomph of Excel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-771708\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/google-sheets-650x283.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Google Sheets\" width=\"640\" height=\"279\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>LibreOffice Calc is no Excel, either, truth be told, but it does a much better job than Google Sheets does. It supports more functions and works problems out a lot faster, too. If you have more than a few dozen cells populated in Sheets, it can take ages for changes to reflect, and loading a sheet can take a long time\u2014none of that with Calc. The big advantage LibreOffice offers is performance: it can do more and does it faster than its web-based counterpart. It also won\u2019t suffer from connection issues and privacy is solid.<\/p>\n<p>Google Workspace can be used on any machine, from anywhere, and automatically backs up data without any interference from you. The apps might be simpler, but if your needs aren\u2019t too advanced, that may actually be a good thing. This is especially if privacy isn\u2019t on the forefront of your mind.
