Two people in the marketing department where she works in Union, NJ, quit last month and she doesn\u2019t think her employer can afford to lose her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides, they owe me a big one,\u201d she said, explaining that her raises have been at or below 3 percent for each of the six years that she has worked there. \u201cLast year I even got promoted, but my increase was only 2 percent. They said it would have been more, but for COVID. If they really think I\u2019m doing such a great job, they should pay me a great salary. Here\u2019s how to do it, according to experts.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Throw_fear_out_the_window\"><\/span>Throw fear out the window<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSome workers worry that they\u2019ll look like money grubbers when they ask for fair pay,\u201d said Cook. This can be used to calculate your value based on your work experience and skill set. \u201cThe educated consumer is in the best position to negotiate,\u201d said Turetsky.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Discover_the_decision_maker\"><\/span>Discover the decision maker<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Identify the individual who will decide whether you will get a raise or not. \u201cIf it\u2019s your boss\u2019s boss, you will want to prepare to get your manager onboard as an ally,\u201d said Cook.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_a_meeting_in_the_books\"><\/span>Get a meeting in the books<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSchedule time for an open, honest discussion with your boss,\u201d said Deosingh. If they say no, reschedule. You don\u2019t want your manager to be more interested in getting you out the door than listening to you.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_make_it_personal\"><\/span>Don\u2019t make it personal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is a business meeting. \u201cDon\u2019t start the conversation with the family or the Mets,\u201d said Turetsky. \u201cGet straight to the reason you\u2019re there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_your_answers_ready\"><\/span>Have your answers ready<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI need more money\u201d is not a reason for a raise. \u201cAsk to be paid for what you do,\u201d said Turetsky. Deliver your raise request as a win-win for you and your employer, so it makes sense and feels good to give you a raise. Have a number for the raise you\u2019re looking for, too, so that you\u2019ll have a well-considered answer when asked.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Follow_up\"><\/span>Follow up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chances are good that you won\u2019t be given a \u201cyes\u201d or told what a raise might look like right away, as it takes time to get approval.
