class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>In 2021, the crypto mining industry went from \u201ca fringe movement, mostly full of hobbyists to a now very professionalized and institutional industry,\u201d Charlie Schumacher, director of corporate communications at Nasdaq-listed bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital Holdings<br \/>\n        MARA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205886758\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-4.45%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       told Distributed Ledger in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look back at what bitcoin mining looked like a year ago, there were only a handful of companies that were publicly traded involved in the space,\u201d Schumacher said. \u201cAnd if you look at everyone\u2019s market cap at that time, they\u2019re far below what they are today.\u201d\u00a0Marathon Digital\u2019s market capitalization rose to more than $3.5 billion from roughly $856 million at the start of the year. <\/p>\n<p>However, the past year has also posted great challenges for some miners. Chicago-headquartered bitcoin miner Blockware Mining, for example, has seen delays in delivery of some equipment due to global supply chain disruptions during the pandemic. \u201cIssues with shipping coming out of Malaysia and other places in the Far East have been extremely difficult,\u201d Michael Stolzner, CEO of Blockware Mining, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso with building out the mining facility, we\u2019ve had to deal with supply chain issues, from switchgear to transformers to other things,\u201d Stolzner said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The industry was also plagued by the China ban. After China<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2021\/05\/21\/bitcoin-falls-as-china-calls-for-crackdown-on-crypto-mining-trading\/\" class=\"icon none\"> started cracking down on crypto mining in May<\/a>, Bitcoin\u2019s hashrate, which measures the total computational power contributed to the blockchain network, fell more than 50% to about 85 EH\/s on a seven-day average basis in July, according to data from Blockchain.com.\u00a0A lower hashrate means the Bitcoin network is less secure and more vulnerable to attacks. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s hashrate has fully recovered since then, reaching a record high of 182 EH\/s in early December, as some Chinese miners migrated to other places such as the United States, Canada, and Kazakhstan, while other miners expanded their capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Some industry participants said that China\u2019s crackdown benefited some North American miners. As Chinese miners went offline in May and June, \u201cthe mining difficulty went down drastically. So the rewards of being a miner and being online were multiplied,\u201d according to Blockware\u2019s Stolzner. <\/p>\n<p>Whit Gibbs, CEO of Compass Mining, a crypto mining marketplace, said that after the China ban, the company saw \u201ca tremendous spike\u201d in the amount of interest for people who want it to mine Bitcoin at data centers in the United States. \u201cIt was about a 300% month-over-month growth for Compass between June and July. So pretty significant,\u201d Gibbs said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mining_2022\"><\/span>Mining 2022 <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>As the industry sees increasing institutional participation, Marathon Digital\u2019s Schumacher anticipates bitcoin\u2019s hashrate will double by the end of 2022. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat obviously means the Bitcoin network is more secure, but then for us, it also means that it\u2019s a more competitive environment,\u201d Schumacher said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Compass Mining\u2019s Gibbs expects bitcoin mining, which has long been criticized for its high energy-costs, will be increasingly environmentally friendly in 2022.  <\/p>\n<p>In 2022, a higher percentage of bitcoin mining will be powered by renewable energies, according to Gibbs. \u201cBecause you know, renewable power is plentiful and cheap. And those are the two most important criteria when a bitcoin miner is looking at a power source.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crypto_companies_funds\"><\/span>Crypto companies, funds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>In crypto-related company trading, shares of Coinbase Global Inc.<br \/>\n        COIN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/225893452\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.72%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       traded up 2.1% to $258 early afternoon on Thursday. It lost 3.8% for the past five trading sessions. Michael Saylor\u2019s MicroStrategy Inc.<br \/>\n        MSTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202561856\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.17%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0traded 2.9% higher on Thursday to $572.24, and was 4.2% lower over the past five days.<\/p>\n<p>Mining company Riot Blockchain Inc.\u00a0<br \/>\n        RIOT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209538617\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-4.98%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0shares\u00a0gained 3% to $23.65, while it recorded a 8% loss over the past five days. Shares of Marathon Digital Holdings Inc. traded up 1.5% to $34, while it was down 9.7% over the past five days. Another miner Ebang International Holdings Inc.<br \/>\n        EBON,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/219243771\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+5.09%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       advanced 3% to $0.98, with a 18% loss over the past five days.<\/p>\n<p>Overstock.com Inc.<br \/>\n        OSTK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200022359\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0traded up 3.2% to $61.66. The shares went down 1.9% over the five-session period.<\/p>\n<p>Block Inc\u2019s<br \/>\n        SQ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205989440\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.32%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0shares\u00a0rose 3.6% to $167.6, trading flat for the week.
