Simultaneously transfixing and difficult to watch,\u00a0<em>Th Witch Who Came From the Sea\u00a0<\/em>is a vicious riptide of substance abuse, seaside squalor, and feminine rage.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring an early taste of the photographic talents of the GOAT <strong>Dean Cundy<\/strong> and a script by star\u00a0<strong>Millie Perkins\u2019<\/strong> late husband, Robert Thom (<em>Death Race 2000<\/em>),\u00a0<em>The Witch Who Came From the Sea\u00a0<\/em>is a unique, sickening, and unforgettable watch. This impressive updated collection from Shudder is a bonafide 101 course on the thrills and chills folk horror has to offer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Releasing in tandem with the streaming premiere of <em><strong>Woodlands Dark &amp; Days Bewitched<\/strong><\/em>, a documentary about (you guessed it) folk horror, Shudder\u2019s \u201c<strong>The Folk Horror Collection<\/strong>\u201d is getting a wildly impressive revamp. The word \u201cunprecedented\u201d is not out of place for the goodies in store.<\/p>\n<p>New to the collection are the \u201cunholy trinity\u201d of English folk horror, largely credited with laying the groundwork for the subgenre\u2019s Western permutations: <strong><em>Blood on Satan\u2019s Claw, The Wicker Man<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><em>The Witchfinder <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a><\/em><\/strong><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>These nihilistic nightmares from the British isles dabble in an especially Anglo-Saxon flavor of ritualistic sacrifice and paganism.<\/p>\n<p>But, as Adam Scovell rightly notes for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/features\/where-begin-with-folk-horror\">BFI<\/a>, the term \u201cfolk horror\u201d has outgrown its British roots to include a large swath of spooky international offerings, many of which are represented in Shudder\u2019s updated collection.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the aforementioned unholy trinity, the collection will be adding the Southern Gothic chiller <strong><em>Eve\u2019s Bayou <\/em><\/strong>on January 1st. Reeling from the disappearance and the media maelstrom that has descended on their small town, the loggers do their best to support one another and their own psyches as they come to grips with what they saw. Then, on a stormy night, their abducted friend returns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In films, alien abduction films rarely feel truly terrifying. Maybe the cultural proliferation of little grey men is to blame. Perhaps all of those tasteless probe jokes have begun to sour.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no small feat that <em>Fire in the Sky\u00a0<\/em>succeeds where so (so, so) many others have failed. Culminating with a colossal and genuinely jaw-dropping train derailment (in truth: a model train yeet\u2019d into a bonfire), the dreamlike quality of this 16mm artifact makes for a compelling testament to the visionary and renegade spirit of its filmmakers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Created by self-taught filmmakers <strong>James<\/strong> and <strong>Eloyce Gist<\/strong>, two African American evangelists who weaponized cinema as a tool for their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing minister, <em><strong>Hell-Bound Train\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>coincides with Criterion\u2019s Pioneers of African American Cinema collection.
