We\u2019ll explain what\u2019s going on, starting with\u00a0<em>Snow Crash<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Origins_of_%E2%80%9CMetaverse%E2%80%9D_Snow_Crash\"><\/span>The Origins of \u201cMetaverse\u201d: <em>Snow Crash<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Author Neil Stephenson coined the term \u201cmetaverse\u201d in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Snow-Crash-Neal-Stephenson\/dp\/0553380958?tag=hotoge-20\"><em>Snow Crash<\/em><\/a>, a dystopian cyberpunk novel published in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>In the novel, the metaverse is a sort of 3D virtual world. It\u2019s not simply a virtual reality <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> but is a persistent, shared virtual world. Or rather, the metaverse is a whole universe of shared virtual spaces seemingly linked together\u2014you could, essentially, teleport between them.<\/p>\n<p>If you think this all sounds a bit like\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ready-Player-One-Ernest-Cline\/dp\/0307887448?tag=hotoge-20\"><em>Ready Player One<\/em><\/a> or a higher-tech version of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsecondlife.com%2F\"><em>Second Life<\/em><\/a>, you\u2019re right.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, in 2011, Stephenson told <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidewalt\/2011\/09\/19\/neal-stephenson-reamde-video-games\/\">Forbes<\/a><\/em> that he saw video games like\u00a0<em>World of Warcraft<\/em> as the real metaverse: Virtual worlds you could inhabit with your friends. In 2021, games like\u00a0<em>Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Fortnite<\/em> are perhaps closer to the vision of the metaverse he foresaw.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_%E2%80%9CMetaverse%E2%80%9D_Just_Rebranded_Virtual_Reality\"><\/span>Is the \u201cMetaverse\u201d Just Rebranded Virtual Reality?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are lots of great VR headsets out there. We love the Oculus Quest 2. It\u2019s the future of virtual reality, and VR games like\u00a0<em>Beat Saber<\/em> will sell you on why virtual reality can be great.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s be honest: When Mark Zuckerberg talks about the metaverse, part of the puzzle is just a desire to rebrand virtual reality. No, it\u2019s not just running games or social <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s on an Oculus VR headset: It\u2019s accessing the metaverse!<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Stephenson made that case to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2017\/06\/neal-stephenson-metaverse-snow-crash-silicon-valley-virtual-reality\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>, pointing out that virtual reality (VR) and not augmented reality (AR) was necessary for that kind of vision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you\u2019re in an AR application, you are where you are. You\u2019re in your physical environment, you\u2019re seeing everything around you normally, but there\u2019s additional stuff that\u2019s being added. So VR has the ability to take you to a completely different fictional place\u2014the kind of thing that\u2019s described in the Metaverse in\u00a0<em>Snow Crash.<\/em>\u00a0When you go into the Metaverse, you\u2019re on the street, you\u2019re in the Black Sun, and your surroundings disappear. In the book, Hiro lives in a shabby shipping container, but when he goes to the Metaverse, he\u2019s a big deal and has access to super high-end real estate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maybe_the_Metaverse_Is_Just_the_New_%E2%80%9CWeb_20%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Maybe the Metaverse Is Just the New \u201cWeb 2.0\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So is that what the metaverse is? A big alternative digital simulation we access through VR headsets where we can pretend to live a good life while we live in \u201cshabby shipping containers\u201d and the world decays around us, as in the novel?<\/p>\n<p>No no, of course not\u2014not according to Mark Zuckerberg, anyway. Here\u2019s what he told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22588022\/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-ceo-metaverse-interview\">The Verge<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The metaverse is a vision that spans many companies \u2014 the whole industry. You can think about it as the successor to the mobile internet\u2026you can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content \u2014 you are in it. And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn\u2019t necessarily do on a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I think a lot of people, when they think about the metaverse, they think about just virtual reality \u2014 which I think is going to be an important part of that\u2026 But the metaverse isn\u2019t just virtual reality. It\u2019s going to be accessible across all of our different computing platforms; VR and AR, but also PC, and also mobile devices and game consoles\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Zuckerberg goes on and on like this, insisting that \u201cthe metaverse\u201d is going to be the next big thing and that, \u201cin the next five years or so,\u201d Facebook will be seen as \u201ca metaverse company\u201d instead of a social media company.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update:<\/strong> Since then, Facebook has renamed itself to Meta. That\u2019s one way to ensure you\u2019re seen as a metaverse company!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To Zuckerberg and other tech CEOs, the concept of \u201cthe metaverse\u201d seems to have more in common with \u201cWeb 2.0.\u201d It\u2019s a bunch of new technologies: VR headsets! Presence! Persistent digital worlds! Imagine having an office meeting in VR while working from home\u2014but don\u2019t worry, you can avoid the VR headset and just participate on your laptop if you like!<\/p>\n<p>When you realize Facebook owns <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/\">Oculus<\/a>, the company\u2019s desire to strongly push a future VR-based platform makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_and_%E2%80%9CDigital_Twins%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Microsoft and \u201cDigital Twins\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s vision of the metaverse seems to take the form of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/745807&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fazure.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fblog%2Fconverging-the-physical-and-digital-with-digital-twins-mixed-reality-and-metaverse-apps%2F\">rambling, buzzword-heavy talk<\/a> about \u201cdigital twins\u201d and \u201cconverging the physical with the digital\u201d with \u201cmixed reality.\u201d Microsoft\u2019s Azure cloud can do it!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as we learned with Windows 10\u2019s \u201cMixed Reality\u201d headsets, that term often just means Virtual Reality to Microsoft.
