The website method is more straightforward and reliable but involves a little bit of command line work. You might feel more comfortable with TypeCatcher, but depending on your distribution, it may not be easy to install.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_1_Google_Fonts_Website\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">Option 1: Google Fonts Website<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>First, head over to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\/\">Google Fonts site<\/a> and select the font family you want to install. Make sure to replace <code>FontArchive.zip<\/code> in the command below with the name of the archive you just downloaded.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo unzip -d . ~\/Downloads\/FontArchive.zip<\/pre>\n<p>Register the fonts on your system with the\u00a0<code>fc-cache<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo fc-cache -fv<\/pre>\n<p>Then, verify if the new font was successfully added by running:<\/p>\n<pre>fc-match FontName<\/pre>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to replace <code>FontName<\/code> with the name of the font that you added. For example, if you downloaded the Loto Sans font, the aforementioned command will become <code>fc-match LotoSans<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>If the output displays the name of the font\u2014Loto Sans, for example\u2014then the font was successfully added to the system. Therefore, you\u2019ll have to either install the fonts using a Microsoft fonts package or extract them from an active Windows installation or the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/356714\/what-is-an-iso-file-and-how-do-i-open-one\/\">ISO image.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_1_Using_the_Microsoft_Fonts_Linux_Package\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_4\">Option 1: Using the Microsoft Fonts Linux Package<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You can install the <strong>ttf-mscorefonts-installer<\/strong> package on Debian-based distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint to install Microsoft fonts on your system.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer<\/pre>\n<p>The aforementioned package provides several Microsoft fonts, including, but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Times New Roman<\/li>\n<li>Arial Black<\/li>\n<li>Arial<\/li>\n<li>Comic Sans MS<\/li>\n<li>Courier New<\/li>\n<li>Impact<\/li>\n<li>Verdana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Arch Linux, you\u2019ll have to download multiple packages from the AUR, each providing a distinct set of Microsoft fonts.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo yay -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-vista-fonts ttf-office-2007-fonts ttf-win7-fonts ttf-ms-win8 ttf-ms-win10 ttf-ms-win11<\/pre>\n<p>To install Microsoft fonts on Fedora, CentOS, and other RHEL-based distros, you\u2019ll have to download the <strong>mscorefonts2<\/strong> RPM package. But first, install the necessary support packages needed for the installation.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dnf install curl cabextract xorg-x11-font-utils fontconfig<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, download and install <strong>mscorefonts2<\/strong> using the <code>rpm<\/code> command as follows:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo rpm -i https:\/\/downloads.sourceforge.net\/project\/mscorefonts2\/rpms\/msttcore-fonts-installer-2.6-1.noarch.rpm<\/pre>\n<p>After installing the aforementioned packages, there\u2019s nothing else that you need to do. The system will automatically add the fonts to your system during the installation process.<\/p>\n<p>To verify if the Microsoft fonts were added to your system, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>fc-match TimesNewRoman<\/pre>\n<p>The output should return the name of the font.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_2_Extracting_Fonts_From_the_Windows_ISO\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_5\">Option 2: Extracting Fonts From the Windows ISO<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a Windows ISO lying around on your computer, you can extract the fonts directly from the installation image. Don\u2019t have the ISO? You can download one for free from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/769894&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-gb%2Fsoftware-download%2Fwindows10ISO\">Microsoft website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the ISO in hand, you\u2019ll need <code>p7zip<\/code> to extract the fonts. Install <code>p7zip<\/code> on your system by issuing the commands below depending on the distribution you\u2019re using, or find it in your distribution\u2019s software center.<\/p>\n<p>On Ubuntu and Debian-based distros:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install p7zip-full<\/pre>\n<p>On Arch Linux and other derivatives:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo pacman -S p7zip-full<\/pre>\n<p>To install <code>p7zip<\/code> on RHEL-based distros like Fedora:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dnf install p7zip-full<\/pre>\n<p>Navigate to the directory where you\u2019ve downloaded the ISO. Then, extract the \u201cinstall.wim\u201d Windows Image file from the ISO using <code>p7zip<\/code> as follows:<\/p>\n<pre>7z e \"Win10_English.iso\" sources\/install.wim<\/pre>\n<p>Make sure to specify the exact name of the ISO file you downloaded in the above command.<\/p>\n<p>Now, extract the <code>Fonts<\/code> folder from the \u201cinstall.wim\u201d archive. Note that there\u2019s no space between the <code>-o<\/code> flag and the directory path.<\/p>\n<pre>7z e install.wim 1\/Windows\/{Fonts\/\"*\".{ttf,ttc},System32\/Licenses\/neutral\/\"*\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/\"*\"\/license.rtf} -o.\/WindowsFonts<\/pre>\n<p>The aforementioned command will extract every font file (TTF and TTC) from the \u201cinstall.wim\u201d image, and store it in the <code>WindowsFonts<\/code> directory.<\/p>\n<p>Move the <code>WindowsFonts<\/code> folder to the <code>\/usr\/share\/fonts<\/code> directory using <code>mv<\/code>.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mv .\/WindowsFonts \/usr\/share\/fonts\/<\/pre>\n<p>Regenerate the font cache using the <code>sudo fc-cache -fv<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_3_Extracting_Fonts_From_a_Dual-Booted_Windows_Partition\"><\/span>Option 3: Extracting Fonts From a Dual-Booted Windows Partition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/187789\/dual-booting-explained-how-you-can-have-multiple-operating-systems-on-your-computer\/\">dual-booted Windows and Linux on your computer, you can directly copy all Microsoft fonts from the Windows partition.<\/p>\n<p>To start, mount the Windows partition to an appropriate directory. Copy all the font files present in the <code>C:WindowsFonts<\/code> directory and paste them under <code>\/usr\/share\/fonts\/WindowsFonts<\/code>. Then, regenerate the font cache by typing <code>sudo fc-cache -fv<\/code> in the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>You can also create a symlink between <code>C:WindowsFonts<\/code> and <code>\/usr\/share\/Fonts\/WindowsFonts<\/code> directories.
