<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Moderna Inc.\u2019s CEO expects fully vaccinated people to need an additional COVID-19 booster shot later this year, as the efficacy of the first booster wanes over time.<\/p>\n<p> Speaking Thursday at a virtual conference of health-care CEOs held by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.<br \/>\n        GS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209237603\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.43%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Moderna<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.39%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Chief Executive Stephane Bancel said the current booster should be enough to protect people through the winter omicron surge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       However, \u201cI will be surprised when we get that data in the coming weeks that it\u2019s holding nicely over time \u2014 I would expect that it\u2019s not gonna hold great,\u201d Bancel said in reference to the booster\u2019s strength. \u201cI still believe we\u2019re going to need boosters in the fall of \u201922 and forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been saying that we believe first this virus is not going away,\u201d Bancel said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to live with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bancel said the United Kingdom and South Korea have already submitted orders for a second round of boosters.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have suggested that the omicron variant is more adept at breaching the defenses of vaccines and boosters. Bancel said Moderna is working on a vaccine tailored against omicron, but that it would likely not be ready until after the winter surge.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the current surge could actually be beneficial in the long run, allowing much of public life to resume if enough of the population gets natural resistance from catching the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Better times seem like a long ways off, though. COVID-related hospitalizations in the U.S. have jumped nearly 60% over the past two weeks, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/covid-cases.html\" class=\"icon none\">a New York Times tracke<\/a>r, while the\u00a0seven-day average for cases\u00a0rose for the 24th straight day to a record 585,535 on Wednesday \u2014 up 247% in the past two weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moderna said earlier this week it shipped 800 million COVID vaccine doses around the world in 2021.
