Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite for EVs nearly doubled in 2021<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image?fit=796%2C417&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2022%2F01%2FUntitled-design-45-1.jpg&amp;signature=858425021b5fd1604225970395282054\" \/><\/p>\n<div>The UK car industry might have been hit hard during the pandemic, but fortunately, <span>there\u2019s a bright spark<\/span>: new EV registrations nearly doubled in 2021, according to the <span>Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is a rare bit of good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for the auto world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\/><span>In\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/media.smmt.co.uk\/december-2021-new-car-registrations\/\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/media.smmt.co.uk\/december-2021-new-car-registrations\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">its annual sales snapshot<\/a><span>, SMMT reported that the ongoing pandemic \u2014 in combination with the\u00a0<\/span>semiconductor chip shortage<span>\u00a0\u2014 continued to have a negative impact on the UK\u2019s car industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, <span>2021 new car registrations grew by a minimal 1.0% compared to 2020, as 1.65 million new vehicles entered the UK market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This number is down a whopping <span>28.7% from pre-pandemic 2019<\/span><span>, representing the industry\u2019s second worst year since 1992 (which had 1.594 million new car registrations).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hope_on_the_horizon\"><\/span>Hope on the horizon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Despite the doom and gloom, we can at least suckle on a\u00a0<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">bit<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>of positivity: 2021 was the most successful year in history for electric vehicles!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some 190,727 new EVs joined Britain\u2019s roads, up 73.6% compared to 2020. This means that the EV market share has nearly doubled year-over-year from 6.6% to 11.6%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Notably, in December 2021 alone, <span>electric cars made up 26% of sales, representing one out of four new vehicles sold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2021s_best-selling_EVs_in_the_UK\"><\/span><span>2021\u2019s best-selling EVs in the UK<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Tesla Model 3<\/li>\n<li>Kia Niro<\/li>\n<li>Volkswagen ID3<\/li>\n<li>Nissan Leaf<\/li>\n<li>Audi e-tron<\/li>\n<li>Hyundai Kona<\/li>\n<li>Mini Mini<\/li>\n<li>Renault Zoe<\/li>\n<li>Vauxhall Corsa<\/li>\n<li>MG ZS<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_the_positive_trend_continue\"><\/span>Will the positive trend continue?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Things seem to be going in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><span>Automakers\u2019 investments look like they\u2019re paying off. On top of this, the UK is working towards its net zero plan, this includes the ban of new petrol vehicle sales in 2030 and various charging infrastructure initiatives, such as\u00a0<\/span>preset charging times and mandatory chargers in new buildings<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, the number of public charging stations is still <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zap-map.com\/statistics\/\">unevenly distributed<\/a>, the Department for Transport has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/dec\/27\/plans-in-england-for-car-chargers-in-all-commercial-car-parks-quietly-rolled-back\">delayed the installation of chargers in commercial car parks<\/a>, and the government has cut the EV grant twice the past year.<\/p>\n<p><span>This is a confusing message.
