Setting goals and making plans is all well and good in theory, but in practice, it can quickly turn into a phenomenon known as \u201ctoxic productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re unfamiliar with this term, it\u2019s, well, exactly what it sounds like: when an aim to be productive via a personal or professional goal starts to impact your life in negative ways. Maybe you can\u2019t ever be away from your phone or take a break. After a while, these habits become toxic for you.<\/p>\n<p>However, that\u2019s just scratching the surface; Perlus broke it down even further for us, dubbing \u201ctoxic productivity\u201d as the new buzzword for workaholism, but with a bit more nuance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToxic\u00a0productivity\u00a0is, essentially, an unhealthy desire to be\u00a0productive\u00a0at all times, no matter what,\u201d Perlus said. \u201cIt\u2019s the inner need to go the \u2018extra mile\u2019 at work or home, even when it\u2019s not expected of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, even when you do reach your goal or cross off all the items on your to-do list, that feeling of needing to do more often doesn\u2019t go away if you\u2019re in a toxic cycle. According to Perlus, people caught in this cycle experience an inability or lack of desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ize or enjoy any downtime. They also engage in little to no self-care because they just don\u2019t have the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThey don\u2019t just want to run,\u201d Perlus said. \u201cThey want to run 25 miles a day to train for the Boston Marathon. But, you have to remind yourself that not everything you do has to have a point.\u00a0Or, the point can be simply and completely for the experience in and of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, if you\u2019re in a toxic productivity cycle, even when you do achieve a major goal or check everything off your list, you no longer feel good about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cPeople dealing with\u00a0toxic\u00a0productivity\u00a0find themselves caught in a cycle of being\u00a0productive\u00a0just for the sake of saying they were,\u201d Perlus said. \u201cThis can mean that, when you finally meet your goals, they feel hollow or not good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Tell_if_Youre_in_a_Toxic_Productivity_Cycle\"><\/span>How to Tell if You\u2019re in a Toxic Productivity Cycle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might be caught in a toxic productivity cycle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An overall feeling of failure:\u00a0<\/strong>Feeling like this even after completing a task or goal, or not being able to let go when something is complete, could be a sign of this negative cycle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluation based on lack:\u00a0<\/strong>Judging your success based on what you\u00a0<em>haven\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>done.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An inability to relax:\u00a0<\/strong>Being unable to enjoy downtime or social situations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pushing:\u00a0<\/strong>Continuing to work even after accomplishing a task.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fatigue:\u00a0<\/strong>Feeling abnormally tired, even after getting adequate rest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you nodded your head to more than a few of these, you might want to slow down and take stock of your feelings. Use this time to take a walk, grab a snack, or chat with a coworker or friend.<\/p>\n<p>If adding a few breaks doesn\u2019t feel like enough, Perlus recommends that you take some time off to recuperate emotionally. If you feel like you can\u2019t take any time off, at least protect your weekends. Avoid answering any work calls or emails on days when you\u2019re not \u201con the clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once again, the best way to stop this type of cycle is to speak with a mental health professional, as he or she will be able to give you the necessary tools to break the cycle for good.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p class=\"p1\">If it\u2019s been a long time since you took a vacation day or even had an evening to yourself, you might be caught in a toxic productivity cycle. This can cause you to feel burnt out, but it can also go on indefinitely.
