Firefox on Windows, Mac, and Linux keeps track of everything you download in its Library\u2014unless you were using\u00a0Private Browsing mode and just closed it. To erase your tracks otherwise, you\u2019ll need to do it manually. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n

First, open Firefox. In any Firefox window, click the menu button (three lines) and select \u201cDownloads.\u201d Or you can press Ctrl+J (Command+J on Mac) on your keyboard.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

The Firefox \u201cLibrary\u201d window will open, focused on your \u201cDownloads\u201d history in the sidebar on the left. You\u2019ll see a list of downloads in progress or completed, and you can perform several actions here, such as clicking the small folder icon beside any entry in the list to see the downloaded file\u2019s current location.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

To remove a single downloaded file from your Downloads history, right-click its entry in the list and select \u201cRemove From History\u201d in the short menu that appears. This will not delete the file that is stored on your computer.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

To clear your entire Firefox download history in the Library > Downloads window, click the \u201cClear Downloads\u201d button on the toolbar.<\/p>\n

Warning:<\/strong> Clearing your download history in Firefox won\u2019t affect or delete the files you\u2019ve saved to your device. If you want to delete the files themselves, you\u2019ll need to find their download locations and delete them manually.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After clicking \u201cClear Downloads,\u201d your download history will disappear, and you can safely close the Library window.<\/p>\n

Firefox\u2019s Private mode does temporarily record your download history while you\u2019re still using Private mode, but once you close all Private windows, your download history will be erased automatically.<\/p>\n

Just remember that the downloaded files won\u2019t be erased automatically: Firefox will forget it downloaded them, but you\u2019ll have to delete them from your computer\u2019s storage manually if you don\u2019t want them laying around.<\/p>\n
