Ted Cruz has walked back comments this week in which he described last year\u2019s Capitol riot as a \u201cviolent terrorist attack,\u201d brushing it off as a \u201cmistake\u201d and \u201csloppy phrasing\u201d on his part.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz (R-Texas) made the initial comment during a Senate Rules Committee hearing with US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaching a solemn anniversary,\u201d Cruz said, \u201cand it is the anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol, where we saw the men and women of law enforcement demonstrate incredible courage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who commits an act of violence should be prosecuted, and anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer should go to jail for a very long time,\u201d Cruz added, \u201cand I think that is a principle that is true regardless of the politics of the violent criminal, whether they are right-wing, left-wing or no wings at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cruz\u2019s description of the riot as a \u201cterrorist attack\u201d drew the ire of Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson, who noted on his show Wednesday night that the senator \u201cdoesn\u2019t use a single word by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/capitol-riots-220103-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Protestors gather at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2020.\" class=\"wp-image-20750914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/capitol-riots-220103-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/capitol-riots-220103-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/capitol-riots-220103-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Protesters gather at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Thursday night, Cruz appeared on the show and called his comments \u201cdumb and sloppy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t buy that,\u201d Carlson said at one point. \u201cI\u2019ve known you [a] long time, since before you went to the Senate. You were a Supreme Court contender. You take words seriously as anyone in the Senate. I do not believe you used that accidentally, I just don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTucker, as a result of my sloppy phrasing, it\u2019s caused a lot of people to misunderstand what I meant,\u201d Cruz responded. \u201cWhat I was referring to was the limited number of people who engaged in violent attacks against police officers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ted-cruz-220107-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Sen. Ted Cruz said, \u201cAnyone who commits an act of violence should be prosecuted, and anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer should go to jail for a very long time.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cruz \u2014 who was one of eight GOP senators to vote against certifying the 2020 presidential election results last January \u2014 added that he was not labeling the \u201cthousands of peaceful protesters supporting Donald Trump\u201d as terrorists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t saying the millions of patriots cross-country supporting Trump are terrorists, that is what a lot of people misunderstood,\u201d Cruz said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carlson pressed further, claiming the senator\u2019s explanation \u201cdoesn\u2019t make sense\u201d and accusing him of \u201cplaying into the other side\u2019s characterization that allows them to define an entire population as foreign combatants.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Cruz explained that his use of the word \u201cterrorists\u201d in that context is not new, as he previously called Jan. 6 a \u201cdespicable act of terrorism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat being said, it was a mistake to say that yesterday and the reason is what you said: is that we\u2019ve had a year of Democrats and the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> twisting words and trying to say that all of us are terrorists, trying to say you are a terrorist,\u201d the lawmaker said. \u201cI just don\u2019t like people who assault cops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senator attempted to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1479272140625092614\">explain himself further on Twitter,<\/a> saying he \u201cwas NOT calling the thousands of peaceful protestors on Jan 6 terrorists. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would never do so; I have repeatedly, explicitly said the OPPOSITE\u2014denouncing the Democrats\u2019 shameful efforts to do so &amp; to try to paint every Trump voter in America as \u2018terrorists\u2019 &amp; \u2018insurrectionists,&#8217;\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was ONLY talking about the limited number of people who committed violent assaults on police officers,\u201d he added in another tweet. \u201cFor over a decade, I\u2019ve referred to those who violently attack police officers as terrorists.\u00a0 If you assault a cop you should go to jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ted-cruz-220107-04.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Ted Cruz on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show.\" class=\"wp-image-20750926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ted-cruz-220107-04.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ted-cruz-220107-04.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/ted-cruz-220107-04.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Tucker Carlson told Sen.
