(Yorkshire Terriers are first.)<\/p>\n<p>Shih Tzus were the second worst NYC biters  with 364 attacks, followed by Chihuahuas, with 344. <\/p>\n<p>Pit bulls are known for their square heads, large shoulders and muscular bodies. They\u2019re a descendant breed of the English bull and terrier, which was bred for bull-baiting and other animal blood sport.<\/p>\n<p>Most pits \u201cexhibit some level of dog aggression,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukcdogs.com\/american-pit-bull-terrier\">according to the United Kennel Club<\/a>\u2018s profile.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month a Wisconsin mother had her arms ripped off while defending her 4-year-old from a raging pit bull.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"831\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Shih-Tzu-300.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=831\" alt=\"Shih Tzu\" class=\"wp-image-20767186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Shih-Tzu-300.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1246 1246w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Shih-Tzu-300.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=831 831w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Shih-Tzu-300.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=415 415w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Shih-Tzu-300.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\"\/><figcaption>Shih Tzus were the second worst NYC biters with 364 attacks over the period.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images\/EyeEm<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The New York City Housing Authority has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/nycha\/downloads\/pdf\/nycha-pet-policy-2018.pdf\">banned residents from keeping pit bulls<\/a> since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Bites by the breed were most common in the Bronx, Far Rockaway and East Harlem, according to the data. \u2014 all areas with a higher-than-average concentration of public housing.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD still breaks up dog-fighting rings across the city, often involving pit bulls.<\/p>\n<p>Mia Johnson, a co-founding member of National Pit Bull Victim Awareness, said the figures were \u201cnot surprising.\u201d She recalled taking her two \u201clittle dogs\u201d out for a walk, when \u201cout of nowhere\u201d a pit bull approached and \u201cripped apart and killed\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teeth are large. The ban was repealed in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pit bull fancier may have won the day, but the children and adults of New York will suffer the consequences,\u201d the late mayor said then.<\/p>\n<p>Pit bulls are commonly adopted from non-profit rescues like Hearts &amp; Bones, which import the dogs from kill shelters in other states.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Serocki, executive director of Pit Bull Advocates of America, has lived with pit bulls for over 20 years and rehabilitated dogs bred to fight.<\/p>\n<p>She said bite statistics can be misleading, because dogs that decades ago would have been \u201clabeled mutts\u201d now get reflexively recorded as \u201cmisunderstood\u201d pit bulls \u2014 when a DNA test might show something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDogs are dogs are dogs are dogs. They\u2019re all individuals.
