\n One of the rookie cops charged with George Floyd\u2019s death was only \u201cdoing what he thought was right,\u201d his attorney said Monday \u2014 fully blaming knee-on-the-neck officer Derek Chauvin.<\/p>\n

It was Thomas Lane\u2019s fourth day on the job with the Minneapolis Police Department when he helped pin down Floyd, 46, leading to the caught-on-camera death that has sparked protests around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was doing what he thought was right,\u201d Lane\u2019s attorney, Earl Gray, said in a \u201cToday\u201d show Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did not stand by and watch. He was holding the legs because the guy was resisting at first,\u201d he insisted of the 37-year-old rookie, who was fired and then arrested and charged along with the three others involved.<\/p>\n

Chauvin was filmed keeping his knee on Floyd\u2019s neck for almost nine minutes \u2014 almost three minutes of which the 46-year-old was completely unresponsive after repeatedly begging, \u201cI can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gray said Lane questioned his superior\u2019s decision to keep the clearly distressed suspect pinned down \u2014 but felt he had to follow his superior\u2019s commands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he\u2019s holding his legs, he says to Chauvin, \u2018Well, shall we roll him over because he says he can\u2019t breathe?\u2019 Chauvin says no,\u201d Gray said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, if you\u2019ve ever been in the military, you ask your sergeant should we do something and he says no, are you going to say, \u2018Well no, I\u2019m going to do it anyway\u2019? I don\u2019t think so,\u201d Gray stressed.<\/p>\n

Lane, Chauvin and two other officers \u2014 Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao \u2014 were fired from Minnesota police over Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Chauvin is due to make his first court app<\/a>earance Monday on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.<\/p>\n

The others are\u00a0charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder\u00a0and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.<\/p>\n

Under Minnesota law, the charges are tantamount to a second-degree murder charge, so Thao, Lane and Kueng face the same potential sentence as Chauvin \u2014 a maximum of 40 years in prison \u2014 if convicted.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
