Developers on Apple\u2019s App Store earned a quarter of a trillion dollars since its launch in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Consider just how many companies and independents that cash has breathed life into, it\u2019s staggering. But that\u2019s not the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>If App Store devs have made $260 billion since 2008, that means Apple has potentially made over a hundred billion for doing, well, comparatively very little. Let\u2019s explore this a bit futher.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2022\/01\/apple-services-enrich-peoples-lives-throughout-the-year\/\">In a recent press release<\/a>, Apple stated it paid out $260 billion to developers since the App Store\u2019s launch. Shit tons of cash for everyone! Yes, certainly. But also not at all.<\/p>\n<p>For the majority of the App Store\u2019s existence, the company has taken a 30% cut from all the money spent on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t uncontroversial and has come under fire in recent years. The highest profile instance is the Epic case, where the\u00a0<em>Fortnite\u00a0<\/em>creator is effectively arguing it should be able to run a payments program outside of Apple\u2019s ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it doesn\u2019t want to pay Apple 30% for in-app purchases.<\/p>\n<p>The entire situation is multi-faceted and complex, but one element the court case brought to light was just how much cash Apple makes from developers. The burgeoning public (and professional) backlash over this forced Apple to react. And it did so by introducing its Small Business Program initiative.<\/p>\n<p>What this means in non-bullshit is Apple reduced its App Store commission to 15% for developers earning less than $1 million a year. Working backwards, this means\u00a0total revenue was around <strong>$285.71 billion<\/strong>. In other words, Apple pocketed around <strong>$85.71 billion<\/strong> by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>We saw earlier that Apple shelled out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2022\/01\/apple-services-enrich-peoples-lives-throughout-the-year\/\"><strong>$60 billion<\/strong> to developers across 2021<\/a>. Because we don\u2019t have access to what split of this falls under 15% or 30% commission, we can say that Apple earned between <strong>$10.59 billion and $25.71 billion<\/strong> in 2021 alone.<\/p>\n<p>This means that, since 2008, Apple has made somewhere between <strong>$96.3 billion and $112.42 billion<\/strong> from the App Store.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_earning_so_much_from_the_App_Store_is_a_problem\"><\/span>Why earning so much from the App Store is a problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to sit here and say Apple doesn\u2019t deserve to earn a substantial amount of cash from the App Store. It has to provide server space, <span>teams working on the service (in development, moderation, marketing, and editorially)<\/span>, security, and various types of infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is cheap. But it\u2019s hard to emphasise just\u00a0<em>how much $110 billion <\/em><em>is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the equivalent of the nominal GDP of Morocco (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/gdp\/gdp-by-country\/\">roughly $109 billion<\/a>). That\u2019s an entire country. It has a population of 37 million. It\u2019s 274,460 square miles. With that money it pays for education, roads, hospitals, military, <em>everything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Apple has outgoings, but let\u2019s not kid ourselves that the majority of what we use from the App Store is created by external devs.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t end there though.<\/p>\n<p>After App Store devs are given their 70%, they have to pay tax on it. If they were based in the Netherlands (where I live), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/country-list\/corporate-tax-rate?continent=europe\">that\u2019d amount to 25%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Want to guess how much tax Apple pays in Europe? Well, thanks to some loopholes (and the Irish government), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/news\/g7-tax-deal-apple\">it gets away with 12.5%<\/a>. In the Epic court case, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/news\/apple-wins-epic-appeal-no-app-store-changes-yet\">the judge ruled<\/a> that Apple had to allow devs to provide customers with alternative in-app payment options. Of course, Apple is still fighting this.<\/p>\n<p>The 30% cut is incredibly lucrative, especially when it comes to subscriptions. Don\u2019t expect Apple to let it go without a fight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter__right\" role=\"presentation\" data-qa=\"message_content\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__blocks c-message_kit__blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"c-message__message_blocks c-message__message_blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer\" data-qa=\"block-kit-renderer\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper--first\">\n<div class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>I\u2019d love to see Apple reduce its commission across all apps. Or, at the very least, be transparent about what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>News releases <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2022\/01\/apple-services-enrich-peoples-lives-throughout-the-year\/\">like this one<\/a> position Apple as a benevolent figure, beaming down with joy at how well its app-making subjects are doing. The reality is more akin to a feudal lord squeezing every last drop of coin it can from those working the land.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Apple has done an amazing job at building its App Store platform, but it needs to become an enabler, rather than a leech.
