\n Iconoclast: Repression Unbound<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Harper\u2019s magazine \u201cOpen Letter\u201d many journalists, academics and others signed in opposition to cancel culture wasn\u2019t mere whining, as critics charge \u2014 but rather, signer John McWhorter explains at Quillette, it was \u00adresistance to a \u201cpoisonous\u201d judgmentalism that has \u201cdemoted, shunned and personally vilified\u201d anyone who opposes liberal opinion. In this atmosphere, even many \u201csmart, progressive people\u201d believe in a \u201cnarrow, punitive form of moral judgment,\u201d much like that during the Salem Witch Trials and Mao\u2019s Cultural Revolution, resulting in such \u201cpersecution\u201d attempts as The Washington Post\u2019s targeting of a private citizen for a bad Halloween costume. Such \u201cnew norms and modus operandi,\u201d which promote an \u201cintellectually unhealthy\u201d climate of \u201cfalsification and self-censorship,\u201d are what alarmed the Harper\u2019s letter-signers \u2014 \u201cnot any perceived threat to our own careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: No More Lockdowns, Please<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans can\u2019t be expected to stay in their homes for months on end,\u201d Bloomberg\u2019s Faye Flam argues. Rather, we have to learn to judge \u201cpandemic safety against other \u00advital needs,\u201d such as the economy and the education and mental health of children. Instead of championing \u201cextreme\u201d measures, public-health \u00adexperts should promote practical ways \u201cto reduce our odds of getting the disease in a way that can be sustained economically and social<\/a>ly, while keeping the curves flattened and hospital beds available.\u201d This is an imperative of justice, because while it\u2019s easy for people with white-collar jobs or fat savings to stay home, it\u2019s impossible for the working and middle classes. Bottom line: \u201cIt\u2019s time to make the best of a bad situation\u201d and strive for \u201csome degree of balance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Teachers\u2019 Dangerous Admission<\/strong><\/p>\n

Teachers across the country denounce reopening schools, with those in Washington, DC, even staging a \u201cdie-in\u201d protest complete with body bags and \u201csigns saying \u2018RIP Favorite Teacher,\u2019\u200a \u201d eyerolls The Washington Post\u2019s Marc Thiessen. But \u201cmaybe they should have brought signs that read \u2018I\u2019m not essential\u2019 \u2014 because that is what they are telling us.\u201d When the pandemic was at its worst, after all, \u201cmillions of grocery clerks, factory workers, food processors, truck drivers, railroad workers, mass-transit workers, sanitation workers, utility workers, police officers and fire fighters continued showing up for work \u2014 because it was essential that they do so. Are teachers less essential than these professions? App<\/a>arently, they think so.\u201d But that\u2019s wrong: A mounting body of research evidence has tallied the high costs to children of not learning and socializing \u2014 costs that go double for poor and minority kids. Worst of all, \u201cwe now know that children are least vulnerable to COVID-19.\u201d It\u2019s time for teachers to get off the couch.<\/p>\n

Israeli: Get Off Our Backs, American Jews<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prompted by movie director Seth Rogen\u2019s recent anti-Israel rant, Shany Mor at The Forward asks \u201cAmerican Jewish boys\u201d to \u201cplease, please, take your Oedipal rage and find another outlet for it. It\u2019s not Israel\u2019s fault you hate your parents. Leave us out of this.\u201d In summer camp in your tweens, \u201csomeone gave you a heroic version of Israel\u2019s history, and now that you\u2019re suddenly surrounded at university by theologians of the grand church of \u00adintersectionality, you feel the need to renounce\u201d the Jewish state. Go for it, Mor says, but bear in mind: \u201cHere in Israel, at least, we\u2019ve taken a critical approach to our history pretty much from day one. The first major literary treatment of the Palestinian displacement in Hebrew came out in 1949, just one year after independence.\u201d Meanwhile, though, Israelis living with complex Mideast realties can\u2019t \u00adafford to serve as props in the liberal diaspora\u2019s psychodramas. \u201cYours sincerely, Israeli Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Yankees\u2019 Anti-American Betrayal<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery New York Yankee kneeled when the National Anthem was played during the opening game<\/a> of the condensed baseball season last week,\u201d fumes David Krayden at Human Events. \u201cThese athletes apparently lack the will or the courage to challenge the meaning behind the act \u2014 a meaning that, after it has been appropriated by Black Lives Matter\u201d has come to represent \u201ca larger Marxist agenda\u201d and \u201cdistaste for democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n
