According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/annualreport2020.iwf.org.uk\/\">a 2020 report by the IWF<\/a>, most web pages hosting CSAM\u00a0are based in the continent.<\/span> In response, the European Union plans to introduce stricter rules on tech firms that host the material.<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/2767e997um?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will propose legislation in the coming months that will require companies to detect, report, and remove child sexual abuse,\u201d EU home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson told<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/ausland\/article236120144\/Sexueller-Missbrauch-EU-plant-haertere-Gesetze-fuer-Facebook-und-Co.html\">Germany\u2019s Welt am Sonntag<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cA voluntary report will then no longer be sufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">The measures would strengthen existing safeguards, but critics fear they\u2019ll pave the way for <span>mass surveillance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cAs with any crime, the fight against online <span class=\"il\">CSAM\u00a0<\/span>needs to be tackled in a way that is proportionate and lawful, meaning that interventions should be targeted against individuals or servers where there is reasonable suspicion,\u201d Ella Jakubowska, a policy advisor at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edri.org\/\">European Digital Rights (EDRi)<\/a>, told TNW.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cIn contrast, the EU\u2019s strategy seems to be to cast a dangerously wide net, proposing measures which might force service providers to scan each and every person\u2019s private messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">The EDRi <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edri.org\/our-work\/a-beginners-guide-to-eu-rules-on-scanning-private-communications-part-1\/\">warns<\/a> that such <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ized scanning poses a<span> serious risk to everyone\u2019s fundamental rights. The advocacy group wants any proposals to detect CSAM to align with the EU\u2019s fundamental rights obligations. It has called for all measures to be lawful, targeted, as well as clearly and objectively proportionate to their stated goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Some of the group\u2019s concerns are reminiscent of the responses to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le\u2019s plans to scan customers\u2019 devices for CSAM.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">The company delayed the feature\u2019s launch amid criticisms of its effectiveness, vulnerability<span> to hackers, and potential to scan for other material \u2014 such as indications of political dissent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">In the case of the EU\u2019s plans, however, new measures will be mandatory.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">A spokesperson for the bloc told TNW that the obligations must be implemented in full respect of fundamental rights.\u00a0 They added that mechanisms to ensure accountability and transparency will be key elements of the legislation.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Despite these pledges, activists fear that the<span> EU\u2019s proposals will create more problems than they solve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-3\"><em>Images and videos of online child sexual abuse can be reported anonymously on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/report.iwf.org.uk\/en\">the IWF website<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
