The fifth \u201cScream\u201d movie doesn\u2019t try to reinvent the squeal.<\/p>\n

Unlike the rebooted \u201cHalloween\u201d and \u201cCandyman,\u201d which successfully dragged their franchises into the present with added social<\/a> commentary, the tired teen slasher film is stuck in the past. And proud of it.<\/p>\n

Though \u201cScream\u201d is set in the modern day, it\u2019s a cinematic time machine to 2000. The whole time you feel like you\u2019re surrounded by Beanie Babies while gorging on Pizza Bagels and listening to the Backstreet Boys.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Running time: 116 minutes. Rated R (strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references.) In theaters Friday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But should a serial killer blood-bath be so comfy and nostalgic for an audience? Not if it wants to maintain our interest. Over two hours, Cinco de Scream-o lumbers along with routine kills and few surprises even when it makes lame attempts at shocking us.<\/p>\n

The heroine\u2019s backstory is a groaner. A should-be devastating development is totally unmoving. And when you think you\u00a0know who is behind the Ghostface mask, you\u2019re probably right.<\/p>\n

Ah,\u00a0oh, the meta jokes. They got out of control in the later sequels, and Cinq drowns in them.<\/p>\n

The big gag here, for example, is to mock the recent rise of critically-acclaimed (and, um, better) horror films.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite scary movie?,\u201d Ghostface asks young Tara (Jenna Ortega) at the start as she stands in her Woodboro kitchen, a la Drew Barrymore in the first chapter. But whereas Drew said, \u201cI dunno,\u201d cinema-savvy Tara replies, \u201c\u2018The Babadook.\u2019 It\u2019s an amazing meditation on motherhood and grief.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Can Ghostface murder me, too?<\/p>\n

After Tara is stabbed \u2014 not fatally \u2014 the self-referential bits\u00a0come faster than they did in \u201c3\u201d and \u201c4.\u201d They make fun of \u201cThe Witch,\u201d \u201cJurassic World,\u201d \u201cThe Last Jedi,\u201d Jamie Lee Curtis, David Arquette and Courteney Cox\u2019s divorce and on and on. Trouble is that Parker Posey isn\u2019t here to bat the bland material out of the park.<\/p>\n

The rest of the story follows the worn-out old pattern.<\/p>\n

Tara\u2019s estranged older sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) rushes to her side at the hospital, and ends up at the center of another Woodboro murder spree. We ask the same questions as always: Which friend will die next? Is that sweet guy the killer? What was Courteney Cox\u2019s last movie role?!<\/p>\n

Sam explains to her boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid) that a Ghostface copycat tries to make a splash in town \u201cevery decade or so. The last time was in 2011.\u201d See? It\u2019s been 10 years since the third sequel. Who came up with these amazing zingers?<\/p>\n

That\u2019d be writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who put so much effort into the humor, such as it is, that they\u2019ve thrown the fright in a blender. I\u2019m a wimp and I might as well have been watching \u201cThe Great British Baking Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new cast fits in snugly. Directors\u00a0Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, taking over for the late Wes Craven,\u00a0have poached a few popular young actors like Dylan Minnette (\u201c13 Reasons Why\u201d) and Mason Gooding (\u201cLove, Victor\u201d) perhaps in hopes of drawing in their impressionable fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And Barrera, who was wonderful in \u201cIn The Heights,\u201d has an earnest intensity that\u00a0will give her a long career. It\u2019s fun seeing her kick ass with Neve Campbell, Cox and Arquette, whose chemistry is a sure thing at this point.<\/p>\n

Yet as much as \u201cScream\u201d references the aughts films and celebrates the slasher genre, it forgets the most important part \u2014 the original was actually scary.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
