If you don\u2019t have insulation on your wires, the electricity doesn\u2019t pass through, so the insulation basically allows nerves to conduct very quickly,\u201d said Langer. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p id=\"block-94e8181e-41e1-4b07-990d-a255b9bbe941\">\u201cThe myelin gets degraded and your nerves can\u2019t transmit as easily, so you start slowing down in\u00a0whatever muscle areas that are fed by these nerves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that Guillain-Barr\u00e9 is an autoimmune response where the antibodies attack the body. Antibodies are the immune system\u2019s weapon against foreign invaders, such as viruses, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/antibodies.html\">according to Live Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cperson\u2019s own immune system damages the nerves\u201d and this causes \u201cmuscle weakness and sometimes paralysis,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/campylobacter\/guillain-barre.html\">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_the_illness\"><\/span>What causes the illness?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Guillain-Barr\u00e9, which is named after French scientists Georges\u00a0Guillain\u00a0and\u00a0Jean\u00a0Barr\u00e9, can be triggered by several things, including a viral or bacterial infection. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two-thirds of people\u201d that had Guillain-Barr\u00e9 \u201chad diarrhea or a respiratory illness several weeks before developing symptoms,\u201d according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-0b6ae74e-ca65-4f39-90e6-d985e8433d6d\">Langer said there are a number of recent medical articles saying COVID-19 has caused some instances of the syndrome, although he hasn\u2019t seen an uptick in his own hospital.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-557f5af7-83c6-4339-9461-7eabf50f0873\">\u201cIt\u2019s still a very rare thing, but it could be associated with a COVID infection,\u201d said Langer.<\/p>\n<p>It affects about 1 in 100,000 people and there are an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 cases a year in the United States, according to the CDC. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_symptoms_of_Guillain-Barre_syndrome\"><\/span>What are symptoms of Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"block-b2e2e7ff-cb09-4d19-9139-1c0f315cf5cd\">Symptoms can be mild, like pins and needles. In the most severe cases, people can lose the ability to walk or breathe on their own. <\/p>\n<p id=\"block-b2e2e7ff-cb09-4d19-9139-1c0f315cf5cd\">Langer noted the disease is usually progressive, starting with numbness and can advance over days or weeks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p id=\"block-b2294c25-0c2b-42b6-aa94-3973d91048d2\">\u201cOver 50% of patients with Guillain-Barr\u00e9 can have some difficulty walking. It\u2019s not an uncommon complication,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-f8bf4717-7156-4360-81ec-d297c5d7581c\">Patients with severe cases are given infusions of immunoglobulin to kick-start the recovery, but it can heal itself in about six months and some people need rehab.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CYe0x7wAUOA\/\">Instagram Story, Bitton<\/a> announced that Jameson was being given a high dose of immunoglobulin therapy, which is \u201can infusion of antibodies,\u201d according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-38e185a1-5fbd-4ebc-8123-3d0896de2ba5\">\u201cMost people get better. The nerves begin to recover within a few months, but it can take a long time. There are a lot of people left with mild symptoms even after,\u201d said Langer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-6f8c4802-e964-4c39-b4a7-224914a35763\">\u201cIt gets really bad before it gets better again.
