Hospitalization numbers are nearing or reaching record highs in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p>But the comparison is likely conservative, with actual infections during the latest wave widely <strong>believed to be significantly higher<\/strong> due to factors including difficulty in booking PCR tests in some regions over the holidays, and changes in testing eligibility in provinces like Ontario after the new year. Wastewater data from different parts of the country also indicate that the actual number is much higher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Do not visit:<\/strong> Canada is so full of COVID that the CDC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/notices\/covid-4\/coronavirus-canada\">is advising<\/a> Americans not to visit, Reuters <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-cdc-tells-americans-avoid-travel-canada-2022-01-10\/\">reports<\/a>. The CDC has\u00a0about 80 destinations worldwide on its do-not-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arruda out:<\/strong> Quebec public health director <strong>Dr.\u00a0Horacio Arruda<\/strong> resigned on Monday, citing a loss of public confidence in his judgment, CTV\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/quebec\/horacio-arruda-resigns-as-quebecs-public-health-director\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Arruda\u2019s letter of resignation, obtained by CTV News, he cited recent criticisms of his work but didn\u2019t specify what exactly he was referring to. \u201cThe recent remarks made on the credibility of our opinions and on our scientific rigour undoubtedly cause <strong>a certain erosion in the adhesion of the population<\/strong>,\u201d he wrote, meaning people\u2019s willingness to follow public health rules. \u201cIn this context, I consider it appropriate to offer you the possibility of replacing me before the end of my term of office.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\"><strong>Back to school:<\/strong> Ontario schoolchildren will be back in their classrooms next Monday, the <em>Star<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2022\/01\/10\/get-students-back-into-schools-ontarios-big-city-mayors-urge.html\">reports<\/a>. <strong>Doug Ford\u2019s<\/strong> office confirmed Monday night that \u201cas planned and previously announced, students will return to in-person learning\u201d on Jan. 17.<\/p>\n<p><strong>N.S. ERs overwhelmed:<\/strong> A Nova Scotia ER doctor says the situation there has never been as bad as it is now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Patients with serious conditions that require emergency intervention \u2014 people at Level 3 of the Canadian triage and acuity scale \u2014 were waiting in excess of eight hours to be seen on Monday, he said. That five-level system is used by emergency room doctors in Canada to evaluate the seriousness of patients\u2019 conditions. The Canadian standard for a Level 3 patient to be seen is \u201cwithin 30 minutes, 90 per cent of the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Omicron exit:<\/strong> In the <em>Toronto Sun<\/em>, <strong>Brian Lilley<\/strong> talks to former\u00a0Ontario chief medical officer\u00a0<strong>Dr. Richard Schabas<\/strong>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-ontario-may-have-already-hit-the-peak-in-latest-covid-wave\">who thinks<\/a> infection has likely peaked in that province.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long haul:<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> <strong>Christina Frangou <\/strong>has an interesting feature on COVID long-haulers, people who are stuck dealing with prolonged illness and even disability.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Conservative estimates suggest that about 10 per cent of Canadians who contract COVID-19 will suffer prolonged symptoms. Some reports put the number closer to one in three. About 1.7 million Canadians have recovered from COVID-19 so far, which means there could be anywhere from 170,000 to half a million people in this country with lingering health issues from the virus.
