Awash in COVID:<\/strong> Omicron has overwhelmed Canada, CTV reports<\/a>, causing more new cases in 40 days than during the entire first year of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

And while the much more infectious Omicron variant app<\/a>ears to cause less severe disease than previous variants of concern, like Delta, the sheer number of infections is still driving up hospitalizations and intensive care admissions, straining already fragile health care systems<\/strong> in many jurisdictions. Hospitalization numbers are nearing or reaching record highs in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.<\/p>\n

But the comparison is likely conservative, with actual infections during the latest wave widely believed to be significantly higher<\/strong> due to factors including difficulty in booking PCR tests in some regions over the holidays, and changes in testing eligibility in provinces like Ontario after the new year. Wastewater data from different parts of the country also indicate that the actual number is much higher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Do not visit:<\/strong> Canada is so full of COVID that the CDC is advising<\/a> Americans not to visit, Reuters reports<\/a>. The CDC has\u00a0about 80 destinations worldwide on its do-not-travel<\/a> list.<\/p>\n

Arruda out:<\/strong> Quebec public health director Dr.\u00a0Horacio Arruda<\/strong> resigned on Monday, citing a loss of public confidence in his judgment, CTV\u00a0reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Arruda\u2019s letter of resignation, obtained by CTV News, he cited recent criticisms of his work but didn\u2019t specify what exactly he was referring to. \u201cThe recent remarks made on the credibility of our opinions and on our scientific rigour undoubtedly cause a certain erosion in the adhesion of the population<\/strong>,\u201d he wrote, meaning people\u2019s willingness to follow public health rules. \u201cIn this context, I consider it appropriate to offer you the possibility of replacing me before the end of my term of office.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Back to school:<\/strong> Ontario schoolchildren will be back in their classrooms next Monday, the Star<\/em> reports<\/a>. Doug Ford\u2019s<\/strong> office confirmed Monday night that \u201cas planned and previously announced, students will return to in-person learning\u201d on Jan. 17.<\/p>\n

N.S. ERs overwhelmed:<\/strong> A Nova Scotia ER doctor says the situation there has never been as bad as it is now.<\/p>\n

Patients with serious conditions that require emergency intervention \u2014 people at Level 3 of the Canadian triage and acuity scale \u2014 were waiting in excess of eight hours to be seen on Monday, he said. That five-level system is used by emergency room doctors in Canada to evaluate the seriousness of patients\u2019 conditions. The Canadian standard for a Level 3 patient to be seen is \u201cwithin 30 minutes, 90 per cent of the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Omicron exit:<\/strong> In the Toronto Sun<\/em>, Brian Lilley<\/strong> talks to former\u00a0Ontario chief medical officer\u00a0Dr. Richard Schabas<\/strong>, who thinks<\/a> infection has likely peaked in that province.<\/p>\n

Long haul:<\/strong> In Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> Christina Frangou <\/strong>has an interesting feature on COVID long-haulers, people who are stuck dealing with prolonged illness and even disability.<\/p>\n

Conservative estimates suggest that about 10 per cent of Canadians who contract COVID-19 will suffer prolonged symptoms. Some reports put the number closer to one in three. About 1.7 million Canadians have recovered from COVID-19 so far, which means there could be anywhere from 170,000 to half a million people in this country with lingering health issues from the virus. An unknown number are struggling to return to their basic activities of life. \u201cYou can be a marathon runner who can\u2019t walk a block,\u201d says Dr. Angela Cheung<\/strong>, a clinician-researcher at University Health Network and a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto who is studying long COVID. \u201cThat is scary for many patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Tests and pills:<\/strong> Premiers pressed Justin Trudeau to distribute more rapid antigen tests and hurry the approval of\u00a0antiviral pills during a call on Monday, Global reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Committees!<\/strong> Opposition MPs are pushing for early recalls of two committees to examine the federal government\u2019s current COVID-19 response efforts and use of Canadians\u2019 cell data to inform public health measures, CTV\u00a0reports<\/a>. Conservative, Bloc and NDP MPs\u00a0 are requesting Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos<\/strong> and senior officials to answer questions about surge support to provinces and other pandemic management questions.<\/div>\n
MPs also want a meeting of the ethics committee to discuss the Public Health Agency of Canada\u2019s plan to continue using anonymized cellphone location data<\/strong> of Canadians to track travel patterns during the pandemic, the Post reports<\/a>.<\/div>\n
Try booze and weed:<\/strong> In the Star<\/em>, Susan Delacourt<\/strong> has a thoughtful column<\/a>\u00a0pegged on Quebec\u2019s recent imposition of a vaccine mandate for booze and weed purchases. She points out that while people debate the best message for politicians to use to encourage vaccination, it likely doesn\u2019t matter too much what they say about it.<\/div>\n

Before anyone gets too focused on what politicians should or shouldn\u2019t be saying to increase vaccination rates, we might remember that their influence on the persuasion front is extremely limited<\/strong>. Even among the general<\/a> public, very few people would leap out of their chairs to make a vaccination appointment because a politician said to do so. Among the vaccine hesitant, political lectures count for less than nothing: distrust of government goes hand in hand with distrust of what\u2019s in the needle, as any glance at social media<\/a> would tell you.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\nDeal with Taiwan:<\/strong> Canada will pursue a foreign investment protection agreement with Taiwan amid its ongoing tension with mainland China, CP reports<\/a>. The announcement got positive reviews.\n<\/div>\n

Economic fears:<\/strong> Canadians told pollster Angus Reid Institute they are worried about the economic impact of a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Game<\/a>s in Beijing, CTV\u00a0reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nOffered to help:<\/strong>\u00a0M\u00e9lanie Joly<\/strong> offered Canada\u2019s help to the United States imposing deterrence measures against Russia\u2014which could include sanctions\u2014to head off a crisis in Ukraine, CBC News reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mexico deadliest:<\/strong>\u00a0Mexico tops the list of countries with the highest number of Canadians murdered abroad since 2016, CTV reports<\/a>. Twenty-five Canadians have been murdered in Mexico since 2016. The U.S. is second (22), followed by Jamaica (17), Philippines (13) and Burkina Faso (10).\n<\/div>\n

Sprawl!<\/strong> The Globe\u2019s<\/em> John Ibbitson<\/strong> writes that<\/a> there\u2019s a simple solution to the housing crisis: let cities sprawl.<\/p>\n

Party continues:<\/strong> Canadian partygoers from a controversial Sunwing flight are still stuck in Cancun, the Vancouver Sun<\/a> reports. \u201cWhat better way to teach them a lesson,\u201d\u00a0Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> joked on Saturday.<\/p>\n
